painting calipers

How do you guys reccomend I go about painting my calipers. What's the easiest and I would rather not remove my calipers because I have no idea how to do it.

I have a paint kit. Not a spray so I'm guessing I could do it without removing the rim or maybe just take off the rim?

Clean the caliper thoroughly with brake cleaning fluid, alcohol and anything else you can find to get them clean, especially at the back. Use a modelling brush about 5-10mm wide. Paint the caliper as far round as you can looking for a natural seam or break to stop the paint line.

Make sure the car is well supported on a jack stand and you have enough room as you'll need to lie on the fllor to do underneath the caliper neatly and stick your head into the wheelwell. I recommend one of those head-mounted torches as inspection lights can get in the way.

Finish them off with decals from ebay.

I used a paint off ebay for calipers that went on really well. You need two coats and it can seem very laborious.

True, you don't need to take the caliper off, you do need to remove the wheels so you can get access.

Don't be afraid of pulling off your calipers though, it's a very routine job and you'll probably like the results better. You've never changed your own break pads I assume?

I didn't remove the caliper, I just undid the bolts and pulled the caliper up slightly to get at the ledges and crevices.

The surface seems too rough to take paint, did you need to clean up any rough spots?

What is the best paint and how much did you use?

Why? They invented a caliper painting kit for a reason. It costs around $10.

I got mine off ebay.co.uk as I live in the UK. It comes in a silver pot and I used about half of it. I certainly didn't need to sand the calipers as the paint is a nice creamy thickness and fills all the roughness on the first coat and looks epic on the second. It self-levels and doesn't run so you can apply it quite easily and the brush marks just disappear as it dries. Just look up the feedback before you buy it.
