Wide Wheel and Tire Combo In 17" or 18"
I am planning on getting my wife a set of black and polished bullet wheels for Christmas to replace her silver 17" bullets on her vapor silver '08 GT and want to replace them with an aggressive looking set of wheels and tires. I like 17" wheels for accelleration purposes but 18" would be fine. I am not interested in 20" or any of the bling bling looking wheels (no offense). What wheel AND tire combination (in the black and polished bullet design) looks really agressive? I want the wheel tire combo to really give it a really nice agressive look without rubbing problems and without too much difference in the overall diameter of the wheels so her 3.55 axle still works well to give good acceleration. Her tires now are 235 55 17s. Pictures would be great!! I would even like to see pictures of wide and aggressive bullet wheels and tire combinations even if they are not black/polished. Thanks!!

you can place any wheel size from 17-20" and it won't change the diameter unless you put a larger diameter tire in there. Your stock tires have a diameter of 27.18 inches.
you can put some 305/30 20 in there and have a 27.20 inch diameter which is almost the same diameter as the 17's And 20" wheels really look great on our car and there are many 20" wheels that arent bling style. I have a great calc that one member here posted, but I can't attach excel files ![]() You should go with 10" width on the rims to fit some real rubber in there

If you want to stay with 17's, M&H has some 275/50's that'll fit. I like them because they give a hint of retro consistent with the whole car. They're 28" tall and at least from the picture, look very beefy but not oafish. This spring I'm getting these babies, and some springs to lower the car about an inch. The downside I'm finding with anything 28 is that, IT SEEMS, you have to use the same tires at all four corners. Nitto also makes a 28.39 for the 18", it's a 285 in width and probably wont fit up front (I'm not sure). Finding 28's at around 255 or 265 for up front is proving very difficult.

Thanks for the initial input folks. It looks like Nitto 555s in 255/45/18 up front and 285/40/18 in the rear may be the ticket on 18/9 and 18/10 wheels. Anybody have an rear photos to show the aggresseness of the width of their tires from the back?
I agree there are some 20" wheels that are not too bling in and of themselves but that itty bitty sidewall look is not what I am looking for nor is it a ride that my wife will like. The small sidewall necessary to get a similar tire diameter between a 17 and a 20 really changes the ride harshness which I know my wife won't like and it also really affects the ability to accellerate off the line and I don't want a 60' time loss. Thanks anyway. More pictures of black and polished wheels with fat rear tires would really be appreciated. Thanks |

You asked for aggressive looking. Very old pics of 10.5 inch deep dish 17s covered by Nitto 315/35/17 drag radials. They're worn down now and waiting for M&H 325/45/17s DRs to arrive.

I thought there wasn't anything larger than 9.5 for the 17 on the s197. What year are those? |

285 40's will look small on a 10" rim. i have 295 35's on my 9.5" rims and they are nice. wish i could fit wider on them, but the tire guys had a pretty hard time getting those on.

I was thinking of keeping the 18's just going to a 18x9 in the front with a 255/45 and in the back have a 18x10 with a 305/35 in the rear. Are DR's whether it be BFG or Nitto worth it for a DD?? i just want to be able to launch at a higher RPM when needed at the track and still drive a good 20K miles on them before they wear out?? Is that possible

i doubt it if you are going to be at the track on a regular basis. my first set of BFG's lasted around 18k, but they weren't DR's and i was at the track smokin them off every weekend. DR's are softer and won't last as long. now i have a new pair of BFG's on back that will seldom see any smoke. got some stock V6 rims with MT ET Streets for the track.

I like these wheels.
American Racing: Official Manufacturer Website- custom, chrome, polished and painted wheels as for tires I say Nitto NT555 255/45-18 front and 295/45-18 rear.

I have the black deep dish bullets 18x9 on front 18x10 on back with 255s and 285 nittos. You can look in my garage and see pics if you like. I know everybody on here says 285s are to small for 10 inch rims but that is what american muscle recomended for that size rim.

Wheels
I didnt want to change my 17" bullets but to get the rubber I needed I had to.
I was like you in the fact I didnt want to slow the car down with big heavy wheels. I ended up with 18 x9 and 18 x10 FOOSE wheels. I have 245 40-18 in the front and 285 35-18 drag radials in the rear. To be honest the car looks a little better but it doesnt ride or drive as well as it did stock. Im sure most of the young ones on here could care less but for me I like a good ride.

From working in tires for a while, I would suggest a 305 30 18 rear tire.
it looks amazing, and offers the great performance. I currently run a 315 35 17 nitto drag on mine, and 275 40 17 nitto 555 fronts, and love them. the car handles like a dream, and grabs anywhere. SUPRISINGLY-nitto DR's will grab in the rain. A buddy found that out, so he thought he would try it in his mach1 with bfg drags...they dont hook for shit in the rain. my nittos have 8k (to the TWI) with a little track useage and daily driving, and I just put new ones on with the discount tire warranty (got to the indicators, and had screws in em they coudlnt fix)

WIll you let me know how those M&H 325's work? If I am thinking right, they run skinny, like nitto's do because M&H said that they would fit on my 17x9's (kinda odd), but thats what they said. Ive heard M&H drag radials dont grab as good as nitto's or BFG, can you confirm or deny that for me? If they are good, I have some Nitto 315 DR's that havent even gotten a mile Ill trade someone that has some and couldnt fit em, + cash of course.
