I'm getting the impression that canned tunes are fairly tried and true. Though not as perfect as a custom tune, I get to avoid the dyno and the possible human error that could destroy my engine.

Can you guys throw in your two cents? Have you or any of your friends had their cars blown up by either process? Please keep it credible. I'd like to avoid anything like "I heard...."

a dyno tune will ALWAYS be safer than a canned tune

It is very, very rare to have a dyno run blow your engine UNLESS you are running to much power for stock internals or you are running incredibly rich or lean...dynotunes are recommended if you have a decent amount of modifications done to your vehicle, if not, canned tunes are very good as well if sent from a reputable dealer (brenspeed, etc.)

What do you mean by canned tune? Like from Bama or from Predator/SCT ect? The Bama/Brenspeed tunes are mail order tunes. But a dyno tune will always be safer than a mail order tune. The only way to blow the motor up is if you are puching it too hard or the guy tuning it is a complete idiot.
