Street Legal?

OK guys . . . I'm a little confused . . .

Everything that I have read leads me to believe that LT's are not street legal. Not sure why . . . moves the cats back or something. Anyway, I'm all set to buy the Bassani mid pipe (x w/ hi flow cats) and catback package from my local shop . . . when they tell me . . . LT's actually can be street legal as long as you are still running some form of cats. ?????????

Huh? That contradicts lots of things that I've read on this site. So now I'm in total rewind to consider the LT's. If that's true . . . I would really like to have them. This is a mostly street car. Cost aside . . . point blank . . .

"ARE LT'S STREET LEGAL WITH HIGH FLOW CAT'S?"

Anybody know for sure? I live in Charlotte, NC. I don't think that we are any more restrictive than most any other place.

A little help here guys?

If you live in a state where you have annual inspections then you need cats if i'm not mistaken

LT's are not street legal, because they move or delete the cats. But most inspection places dont exactly know where your cats were located in the 1st place if they did a visual check, so they will pass you.

anytime the cats are moved from their original location it's illegal.
if you don't have to go through visual inspection you should be OK with longtubes.

+1 and hell if they don't do a visual you can get by even without cats if you have a really good tune. I knew of a guy that had a last gen Trans-Am, and had it fairly modded, a cam, and full boltons if I remember right. He was also catless and he managed to pass the smog test without paying anyone off.

Cool. Thanks for the info guys. Anybody out there running LT's with high flow cats? . . . Or are most people ditching the cats with the LT's?

I have heard that you get a much better performance gain with the LT's. It that offset by the hight flow cats? . . . or can I still expect better sound and HP gain?

Anybody in NC running the LT's w/ cats and an inspection? I really want the LT's . . . but it's got to pass inspection.

Also, I've read in a couple of threads that the mid-x cross does not work well (or at least drones badly) with the LT's. Anybody got an opinion on this?

Horsepower gains from going catless will be minimal maybe 5. Chances are your exhaust will sound raspier, and you better like the smell of gasoline if you catless.

Smell of gas? Not really. Hmmm . . . is that typical? I wasn't really thinking of that. Bassani LT's will end up running me about 1K for parts . . . so it's a serious question. Are you running Lt's? If so, do you like them?

Supposedly the kooks LT's and catted x-pipe will pass inspection and lose less than 3hp for keeping the cats.

Ditching your cats will make you smell gas more often, because of all the unburnt fuel thats now coming out of your exhaust.

Hey Skrapr, I got Kooks LT headers w/catted X. Its legal and I get mine inspected at a local Rocket Auto Parts shop in Fayetteville, NC. No issues there. Supposedly the Kooks flow so well that you only lose 3hp in comparison the to offroad version. I never noticed a gas smell with my setup. I love my LTs but now I am trying to find a good axleback to get a deep sound with my setup. Hope this helps.
