Shaker Hood Scoop System

Well, I just received the kit today.

I'm planning on tackling this myself. It doesn't look too difficult. Anyone have any experience with this install? I firmly believe my hood is NOT metal of any sort so cutting into it shouldn't be too tough of a task, I'm hoping...

Any input would be great. I plan on trying to do this Saturday. I'll post pictures of the progress.

I believe your hood is mostly fiberglass. I have been told that the 05-07 have an imprint under the hood liner which may be a good guide to use. Make sure to measure and mark it carefully before cutting. Make sure to take some pics of your install and share them with us. Good luck.

Unless you have an aftermarket hood, your hood IS metal.
The most important part of the whole process is the location of the center line. If that is off your hole will be off.
I used 2" masking tape and ran it from one end of the hood to the other. once that is done take a razor, or exacto knife and cut the tape away from the windshield washer nozzles.
Make sure you match up the center line on the template with the center line of the car, cut out the two small holes on the template and place over the washer nozzles. Then tape the template tightly in place.
This is a very important step, make sure you use something very sharp to cut along the line of the template. push down firmly because you need to go through the paper, tape, and most important you want to score the paint to prevent chipping.
Once you have cut all the way around you will have two choices, remove the tape from the inside the cut out or from outside the cutout.
The directions say to use a hole saw to start, I just used a large drill bit and drilled the hole about two inches inside of the line.
Just go very slow while cutting and take your time. When you get one length of cut done, stop and place a piece of tape along the whole cut, this helps greatly with vibration.
The most time consuming part for me was the filter box. The directions say to use a smaller hole saw then the actual size so that you get a tight fit. I had to keep filing and sanding to get a good fit.
One thing that the directions do not cover is the bare metal the is left exposed. Make sure you apply some kind of corrosion prevention to the area. I used an alodine pen.
Make sure that you have everything lined up good before putting the plastic seal on the outside of the hood, the double sided tape they give you is very sticky and it is almost impossible to shift it once it is pressed down.
Another thing that I did that is not in the directions is I applied a bead of clear RTV around the outside lip of the seal to ensure no water intrusion.
This is not a complicated job, you just can't have any fear of cutting into your new hood.

Measure twice and cut once...it seldom works the other way round.Good luck with your installation. What brand did you get? I'm having mine done next wednesday I waited a month or more for it to come in. Can't wait.

I do not have a 05-07 and therefore made the assumption it was a fiberglass hood like mine. You know what happens when you ASSume. lol
I stand corrected. Good luck with the install and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for all the input. I decided to try and tackle this one on my own. I have to say it was harder putting everything together than it was taking stuff apart.

The hood is fiberglass or something other than metal but does have metal reenforcing. I used a sawzall with a fine tooth blade for cutting the straight lines and used a hand scroll saw for the corners.

I went with the Classic Design Concepts brand from Mustang Tuning.

So here's the pix of what I did.

This was taping off the area to be cut.

Adding the template...accurately.

The template is ready.

This is with the hood liner removed. You can see the "cutout" for the hood scoop but I didn't use all that area.

This is the liner removed and ready for marking so I can cut the opening in it.

Here is the Shaker assembly that goes on the motor.

Before scoring...

After scoring.

After cutting...

From underneath and you can see that I did use most of the "cutout" area after all.

Engine compartment with air box and intake hose removed for modifications. I had to cut a 3" hole in the rear of the airbox for the scoop "cold air" intake. They also supplied me with a nice new air cleaner.

Hood liner and cutout framing in place.

The Shaker finally goes on and gets securely mounted to the motor.

The airbox assembly gets reinstalled.

Front view of the finished project.

Since it was so late when I got done I'm going to wait until tomorrow to start it up and test drive it. So far I'm pleased with the look.

the only ting that i do not like about that kit, is the engine cover. seems way to......... just blahhh. is there a way to cut those covers off if you wanted to or are they used to hold the shaker on?

Great "how to" and pics. Congrats on what appears to be a great install. Definitely, looks good to me.
This is a very popular mod for the 05-07 as we had 3 with the CDC shaker set up at our big car show today.

By the way, I am also glad to hear that I was right about the hood material.

I tend to agree about the engine cover. I think it's mainly there for rain and water shedding as well as the drain tubes. Most of it can be removed. The two bolts that hold the assembly to the engine attach to the two top bolts holding the throttle body on. The rest of the plastic could be cut away. Funny that I have almost the same Mustang panels on my door sills. They match perfectly.

On a side note, the two bolts attachment points as well as the air intake reconnect were actually the two hardest parts of the reassembly. That access area is totally not accessible with human hands and eyes. The front of the engine cover comes down so close in the front there is no room left for the factory parts. It was very difficult. I had to basically force the front lip of the engine cover up to get the air intake back on.

But I had to attach the two top bolts first and I couldn't see the holes so I had to fish the bolt up there in the socket and hope for "pay dirt."

I took it for a test drive this morning and it ran no worse. It felt a little more responsive but it might be my imagination of wishful thinking enhancing the experience.

***

Glad you guys liked the pictures. I left about half of them out and on certain other parts of the install I didn't get any pictures. Like installing the cold air intake to the existing air box was a challenge. I had to make the hole just the right size to ensure a tight fit. The instructions recommended a 2 3/4" hole and bore it by hand to a 3". I used my Dremel tool with a router bit to get the other 1/4" of material off while still being tight to the intake tube. That was another difficult and time consuming task.

But overall it wasn't too hard to do and mind you I don't work on cars for a living. I support a computer network. So really anyone with the right tools should be able to do this themselves.

It only took me 4 hours total. I took six but stopped for dinner and to play some guitar.

Thanks for the feed back you guys. It's much appreciated.

I am getting the same kit put on over a Roushcharger . The manufacturer says they have done 3 so far and it requires a couple of extra braces. I have an appointment to take it in on wednesday . I agree with Drgnracin72 about the covers and hate that it will cover up my roushcharger so I'll be looking for a way to get rid of some or all of it.
By the way Bish, the one that I did see and got to talk with the guy says if he sets cruise control at about 72 is getting 31mpg on a trip (his is an automatic trans)

I gotta think there should be some advantage bringing cold air in from outside the engine compartment. Economy is a great thing.

Good luck with your install and your RC, wow!!! I really think you can remove most of the engine cover materieal as it's just a molded piece of plastic. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Try reading my 2ns post again...it is not to Bish (who did a fine job)....it is to GT who hasn't put the Roush charger on yet with the scoop.

I will definately post some pics with the shaker . Weds is the big day, can't wait. Getting some flowmasters at the same time so I'm expecting the car to act a little different . They say add 15 hp for the shaker and 10 for the flowmasters. If I get 15 total I'll be happy since I'm happy with the hp now. I raced an 05 Saleen supercharged thru 2nd and 3rd gear before we caught up with traffic When I hit 3rd I went up 2 lengths on him. 2nd was about dead even.( he claims the rev limiter shut him down.) lol
