TPS Sensor question

All, I am looking into new wheels and tires but having an 07 I need the TPS sensor but the only place that seems to even offer them as an option when purchasing wheel and tire bundles is Tire Rack but they want $300+ for 4 TPS sensors, Heck I could buy another wheel for that. Some questions...

1. Is there a way to re-use the TPS sensors I have?
2. Is there a cheaper place to buy the sensors?
3. Can the TPS sensor be shut off with a hand held tuner so I could just leave them off?

You can have the old ones extracted and reinstalled on your new wheels. you can also purchase them as mentioned.

I had the TPMS system disabled in the ECU about a week after I got my wheels. The system didn't activate but maybe 3 times across an 8 day window. I don't need to monitor my tire pressure off my dash, don't understand why it's there anyway, it's routine normal maintenance.

I remember you looking for those. I looked all over through every bookmark I have, and couldn't find them for you.

There is a company that is looking into doing these and making them affordable. So stay tuned. I think it is SHR if memory serves me right.

I don't get why people don't like the tpms. It seems to me like emay is a little stubbern and doesn't want to except new technology. you would rather check your air everyday instead of letting a computer do it for you? that makes a lot of sense. Don't understand what the big deal is. I just bought new rims and it cost me like $30 to get them switched out.

Because most TPMS systems I have messed with have problems..... From what I have been told TPMS is a new federal regulation. It is on every 08 car I have seen so far. I honestly don't know why they didn't copy GM and use the ABS system to monitor them. It would have been easy to monitor wheel speed when cruising to see if there is a low tire.

You are correct, most 2007 model cars have them, and all 2008+ have to have them. I'm glad they didn't copy GM's system. I work at a tire shop and we have more problems with gm's than any other sensor. Fords are pretty good. You never have to reset fords sensors either. Anytime you rotate your tires, or get a flat with a gm you have to have the sensors reset.

I don't ever want to rely on a piece of technology to inform me of something I should be conscious about. This is why people get lazy, technology is not always the best answer to some of lifes most simple things. I've imbedded and accepted responsibility for my vehicles and all the normal items since I was legal to drive. Tire pressure is in my routine.

As many of you know I come out of a heavy sportbike background and lifestyle. It's in my blood to do an overall check of any vehicle I drive because of that - a bike makes you more aware of your routine maintenance as neglect is far more likely to result in serious injury or death. I don't need it to be told to me, nor do I need to spend an extra 30 or 40 dollars to replace or swap something that never cost me anything previously. It's a nice racket they got there, but no thanks.

Lastly, I swap wheels fairly often, my stockers for the winter months and storage, my DR's for drag strip days, and my 20s for summer daily driving. I refuse to have to sensor all of them, so the system is deleted as it's un-needed.

Juco, looking back at this, it comes off like I'm trying to defend myself, I'm definately not, just stating why I'm stubborn is all, it's true that i am but I feel rightfully so for this topic.

I wasn't talking about GM's TPMS sensors.... I was talking about the old system they had that used the ABS system to read if you had a low tire.

I am glad I have an 06.I have two sets of wheels I switch for summer/winter, street/track. Set of 20's and a set of stock 17's.It would suck to have to deal with that stuff.. I own a tire pressure gage and can afford the time to check my pressure.I guess I am old fashioned...

how did you delete the system exactly. i got new rims and did not switch the sensors and press the reset button when i start the car to get rid of the warning. how did you shut it off permanently?

btw i agree with you about the TPMS being a lousy improvement.

I already had this debate in another thread here, so I'll just copy over what I already wrote. lol :

(note this was from another thread, Emay, so the snappy comments are not directed at you lol)

Whatever you say, captain high miler. lmfao

Of course you should be able to feel your car. As I say, and I'm not not trying to put you down, but I promise you I have more feeling for any vehicle in my pinky than you do in your entire body. It's what I do for a living. I'm not just a steering wheel holder. You don't get a job hauling what I haul, and keep it, doing what I do. Luis, I can tell when a wheel bearing is going bad or a tire is going flat or a wheel is bent...on the rear axle of my trailer....60 feet behind where I sit in a bouncing Mack truck. I promise you you have a long way to go to get to where I am.

But this is not the point. The point of systems like the TPMS system is not to replace one's feel for a vehicle, it is to assist you and provide that much more information for you and that much more safety. Balking at something like that would be like saying air bags are stupid or seat belts are stupid because you are so in control you won't ever have an accident. It's meant to be an addition to everything you already do to drive safely.

I take defensive driving courses for work all the time, and am trained constantly about how to monitor for these things.

No offense man, but I assure you that my experience and what I do absolutely means everything.

lmao Luis....good times

Also, from the other thread, Emay:

The TPMS is great. Especially if you drive a lot as I do. If you pick up a bolt or a screw in a tire, the system will tell you when the pressure gets low, allowing you the chance to stop and put some sealant in the tire and possibly save a tire. Well worth 120 bucks.

Not to mention it adds to safety, as being able to stop before a tire actually becomes completely flat and/or comes off the rim can save your entire car. It will at the very least save my 18" aluminum rim, which cost about 300 bucks from the dealer to replace. And if you remember my flat tire thread, I had this exact situation this past summer.

Technology is not meant to replace routine maintenance, it's meant to add safety. Anyone who would forgo routine maintenance because of technology is likely the type of person who would ignore it anyway.
