Opinions on the STS single turbo kit for 05+ GT

What do you guys think of this kit? I just bought it for a good deal from someone over on mustangforums.com. Will it make decent power or what? Let me know what you think.

I've heard they're ok kits but they aren't that great, only what I've read around here. Is the sts for mustangs a rear mount turbo also? What size turbo is the one you got?

Well I was wondering because they have two available turbo sizing for their gto kit so I was wondering if you guys also had two options. I hear the lag is pretty bad.

maybe he got pissed off because he didnt make the power he wanted. with turbos you can make as much power as you want though, bigger turbo means more power potential. maybe it was just him, you can prove people wrong about the kit.

I didnt think there was going to be really any lag but maybe because the turbo is located in the back with all that piping it could be possible. I dont want a race car i just want the turbo sound and something to back it up with. I also want to run in the 11's somewhere trapping at least 120 if not more.

Did he send you his dyno graph for proof, if so, call the tuner listed on it and get the low down.

I have yet to see any sts come close to those numbers at 10psi. The lag is very evident, and most of the graphs you will see will show you this. Most of the guys running rear mount turbo's stage first because they know first hand they need to get on the trans brake(if automatic) and build boost, if they get in last the lights come fast enough to beat the driver to his max boost level. The manual guys have to get creative to build off the line because you have to load the drivetrain as most of you all know.

The kit is a great idea for a limited space application. The mustang has plenty of room though as seen in the Helion layout. Guys are even custom stuffing twins up there. No reason to want the turbo that far out when it can be right at the motor.

If you paid less than 2500 for it, then I say it's a good choice if you got the support fuel pieces, intercooler, and all of that tubing your going to have to run to the rear of the car. If not, I would cancel with the guy and get something different.

I bet you can get what you want out of it with some work, particularly a boost controller. The fastest gto recorded 1/4 mile time at the gto site is 9.something and he ran an STS kit. There are tricks for it. Like you should use header wrap/heat wrap on all the the tubing leading up to the turbo to minimize lag. I know they're different cars, but from what I've read most gtos get boost from their sts kits around 4rpms at WOT in 1st, just to give you any idea of the lag. The fact the their is so much tubing and its at the back is the main reason it has so much lag.

The STS website says the base unit is good for 620hp. So that might be in the 500 rwhp (depending on dyno). At that rating it's probably a 60-62mm turbo for the base kit. Seems like they use Garrett which is a first class unit.
You have to be careful though when sizing a turbo for your car. Larger is not necessarily better.

My buddy preaches that his STS kit is really good, but he's running it on a 350Z. I personally don't know much about them though.

Ya john i bought it and the guy shipped it yesterday to me. It comes with abosuletly everything i need intercooler, boost controller, all the piping and the turbo is a 60 garrett and even through some free stuff for me like a boost gauge. I got the kit for $2850 and its worth about $6700-6800. If i can make 500whp illl be happy. Im gonna keep in contact with STS on how to upgrade everything and see if i can get the most out of their kit .

Its a garrett 60. I guess its similar to the one on the Hellion kit but i think they use a 62mm.
