My 08 GT sometimes makes a strange, well, for a lack of a better word, buzzing noise,

when idling high during warm up. It sounds like when the wind is blowing really hard and it makes that thin metal weatherstripping on the doors of the house vibrate and buzz. I never heard it when I had the stock air cleaner on the car, but it was fairly warm when I bought it and the car didn't idle as high or take as long to warm up, so I'm not sure there's any relation to the new CAI system. I've checked all the clamps on the CAI and everything is tight and sealed well, so I don't think its coming from the CAI. Its not a constant buzz, just lasts for a few seconds then stops and does it intermittently until the car is warmed up some. I usually turn on the heat in the car when I start it so that the inside will be warm by the time the engine is warmed up, but I've left the heat off inside and it makes the noise anyway, so I know its not the fan motor. I've opened the hood and waited for the noise to occur, but have been unable to determine where its coming from. Any ideas what this could be?

in the 30's to low 40's, like I said its been fairly warm here.

But the last time I heard it was a few days ago, very briefly and the temps were in the low 50's that time. Its always been in the first 3-5 minutes or so of starting the car. As soon as the idle starts dropping back down toward normal, the noise stops.

maybe just the car warming up, not sure though. If it continues or gets worse i'd take it to get checked out.

It's probably the power steering pump. Fords have always had noisy steering pumps. Mine makes the same noise.

Thanks Grabber, I'll pay close attention to the PS pump next time I'm trying to track

down the source of the noise. I see you have a 3.73 rearend, I assume you upgraded from either a 3.31 or 3.55. I've got 3.31 and am thinking of going to 3.73. Could you tell a substantial difference in acceleration when you upgraded yours? Also thinking of trashing the Hurst shifter that's been giving me problems and the Ford dealer is giving me the run around on. I've been looking at the Steeda Tri-ax, how do you like yours?

MGW is the best shifter for Mustangs. I would look into 4.10s also.

Just installed the MGW Shifter and 4.10's about 2-weeks ago. I love'em. We could argue about the gears depending on your other mod's . . . but the MGW Shifter is BADASSSSS!
Highly recommended.

I Love the Tri-ax, one of the best necessary mods you can do to this car is a shifter...and you're not the first person that didn't like the Hurst. I only had the 3.73 gears in for about 4 hours before I tore the car down to install the supercharger, but it definitly felt a lot quicker than the 3.31's.

+1 I would also argue gear selection based on not so much mods, but trap speeds (about 117 m.p.h. in 4th gear @ 6000 r.p.m. with 4.10's requires less than 475 r.w.h.p.)...if you go to the track, you can run out of 4th gear before the end of the 1/4 mile with a poweradder and 4.10's. That's why I went with 3.73's (128 m.p.h. in 4th @6000 r.p.m. requires over 510 r.w.h.p.).

Thanks guys, yeah I knew I'd get a lot of MGW guys chiming in on the shifter.

They're only ~ 2 hours from me and I have family in Augusta. Sounds like a good excuse to go see them. I'll call MGW and find out if they have a retail location or if I have to order it. Since this is a new car I wanted to stick with Ford speed parts and service so the warranty would hold up, but with every Ford I've owned I've ended up getting the run around from the dealer on defective parts or shoddy service or both. I swore after my last Ford that I'd never buy another because of that, but here I am again with a great car and becoming a little disappointed in it simply because of BS service. As for 4.10's, I don't intend to do any drag racing with it, other than maybe a few times just to find out what the car will do. That's why I was thinking of 3.73's, still have more acceleration but I won't run out of the gears as quickly. So far my only power mod is the addition of a K&N CAI. Was thinking of the Brenspeed X-cal2 tunes, but held off when my shifter started acting up because I wasn't sure at the time that it was the shifter making the noise. Was concerned Ford might have to do engine work and then reflash the computer. Now I've decided to go ahead and do the gears (I guess I'll have Ford do those and pray they do it right and that the gears are not defective) and maybe an aluminum driveshaft and underdrive pulleys, and then get the tuner from Brenspeed. I guess the main reason, other than Steeda's good rep, I was looking at the Steeda shifter over the MGW is out of laziness, I can get the tuner, driveshaft, pulleys and Tri-ax all from one location.

Heard a lot of good things about Steeda Tri-Ax as well . . . almost bought it . . . but the reason that I ultimately ended up going with the MGW was a lot of discussion about transmission noise. I read some threads where the Hurst and Steeda worked well but added a lot of in-car noise. Apparently, MGW has some kind of "patent-pending" sound design that eliminates those types of problems. Whatever. All I can tell you is that there is no additional cabin noise in mine when compared to the stock shifter . . . just super tight shifting and a lot better feel.

If noise in the car is an issue . . . you may want to go with the MGW. Just what I heard . . . or more . . . what I don't hear.

I did get a lot of noise and tunnel heat in the car after the tri-ax install, because the shifter does not come with any sort of boot that fills the gaps around the shifter that the stock boot used to fill. There is an easy fix, however. I bought a couple of small sheets of dynamat cut into strips to lay around the shifter to close the gaps and keep the noise and heat out, and it worked like a charm. I covered all the exposed tunnel that I could get to with the leather boot off, and it's quieter now than it was stock. That's the only inconvenience I've had with the tri-ax, it's been a great shifter, no issues whatsoever.
