My wife and I have a subscription to SiriusXM and I'd really like to be able to use it in my car. Her 2011 Explorer was set up for it from the factory. I know I would need a new head unit but what else?
I was looking at some really nice head units on Crutchfield's website that say they are XM ready and "compatible with XM Tuner." But when I search on their website I can't find any such thing. I remember seeing an XM antenna years ago when I was looking at it for an older car but I can't find anything like that now. Has anyone done this?
Either run an aftermarket headunit, a Sirius/xm tuner, or if you don't wanna get all of that stuff download the Sirius XM app on your phone, hook it up to your aux plug, and stream it when you're in the car. Theres a lot of shows on demand on there that you can download on your wifi at home and play back in the car to save data as well. I do this with Howard Stern for example.
You can probably find a used, and ready to go OEM set up, that would be almost just plug and play. If not I honestly would call sirius and talk to them and see if they have recommendations. Good luck!
XM Sirius have lots of their own brand. You could mount it somewhere and plug it into the auxiliary and then run the antenna up to the windshield under the trim. For an OEM setup your gonna need the correct stereo and depending on if you have a convertible or a coupe there's a large blob of an antenna that goes on the decklid or the roof.
That is the tuner you can use with an XM compatible headset. I've been running it with 6 in LCD Pioneer unit for a couple years now without issue. I have the antenna on the roof but I've seen some create setups that put the antenna in the child safety seat latch in the back.
If you wanted to keep the stock stereo you can get an external unit and get a Pie aux adapter so you with then have a usable head phone jack
I bought & installed a Sirus receiver and plugged it into my stock '08 Shaker 500 head unit. Install was easy. Put receiver under the pass. seat and all the wiring under console. I will try to find the name of the company. The antenna is a little black thing that sits with a magnet on the rear deck behingd the convertible rear window. Works great.
OK, here's how I did it. I had replaced the Shaker 500 head unit from my '06 with one from an '08. I can't see any real difference in the two. Anyway, I got a kit from United Radio, Inc. I believe it's the same exact kit that comes from Ford. The kit # is 4047455. It was fairly easy to install, but it did require taking the head unit out so wiring harness could be plugged in the back of the unit. I installed the receiver under the pass. seat and ran the necessary wiring under the console. The antenna is the little black "blob" and it sticks with a magnet right behind my convertible rear window.
It works as well as any factory installed satellite set up-I love it. I have driven all over the US listening to the same stations.
I think I even saw this kit on Ebay, probably cheaper than I paid. Good luck!
