FRPP sells Motive gears but the true FRPP gears have an "A" at the end of the part number.

just spoke with Daniel Wright at Motive Gears, in Chicago, IL. He told me Motive makes ALL 8.8" Ford Racing Ring and Pinion sets from 3.55 to 4.56. He told me buying FRPP gears is redundant because they are Motives.

and i'm looking at the 2008 ford racing catalog and i see what you mean about "A".. But there are "N" and "M" pn 3.55's,3.73's, and 4.10's. i can even see the ford branding on the end of the pinion.

Like redfire said, ending with a part number A they are made by ford, ending in part number M they are made by motive and are cheaper from frpp if you look at the price. The ones that end n, I remember seeing them but dont know what they are.

just clearing a misconception.. so the 3.55's and the 4.10's are made by ford.. and then there's another set of 4.10's made by motive and sold by ford as well as a set of 4.30's... the 3.73's have a "N" so who the makes them?

At least Richmond is a quality gear, unlike Motive.

The problem with motive is they whine. Always do. Very rarely do you get a set that doesn't.

It's not just common practice in manufacturing to have multiple suppliers for parts, it's a requirement for risk management. What would happen to Ford if Motive's plant got flooded by molasses and they couldn't get gears to Ford for two months? Ford would have to get another supplier up and running real quick. And real quick in manufacturing always means 200-300% more expensive than just quick. That's exactly what happened to Ericsson in the cellphone market a few years back - one supplier for both Ericsson and Nokia. That supplier's plant burnt to the ground and only Nokia had a backup supplier. Ericsson never recovered from that in that particular industry.

all gears whine if they arent set up right... and will whine unless you set the perfect pattern (i.e. middle of the face on the coast/drive sides).. i like the whole 3.90's whine crock of shit... say your pattern is too low, on deacceleration you'll get a whine because the pinion is in the gear to much...

Wonder if the new surfacing Ford has for the 3.73s reduces whine at all?
"New manufacturing technology utilizing a Face Hob Process which features a single pass pinion tooth machining operation compared to a conventional three pass process for machining. CNC cut and lapped gear teeth. Higher strength and better quality gears are produced with the Face Hob Process. NOTE: These new gears look a little different, the gear teeth are cut on a different angle and the ring gear has a bevel on the back of the gear."

straight cut... or the more helical the shape of the gear, the more whine... BUT helical cut gears are stronger by all means.. thats why race car tranny's whine so much... i personally love the sound lol thats just me.. i'd set mine up little tight on purpouse just to get alittle whine. richmonds are goooood gears... aac are good too if they're around. strange, really good. but richmond has a set that 6lbs lighter than their normal offering.
