front sway bar is to help control body roll.
idk about other sway bars but im told its to help the car keep from shaking at high speeds....i might be way off with that or right on target the front sway bar im 95% on

regulate over/understeer and stabilize body in cornering to maintain better traction. a very stiff front sway bar will actually pull the inner front wheel off the ground in a very hard turn because it maintains the body stability. no front sway bar will cause severe body roll in the same turn while the wheels stay firmly planted. these are drastic examples though. a stiff rear sway bar helps oversteer, which is a preferred driving style for sports cars

Ok swaybars reduce roll whether it is the front or rear. One side is connected to the other with a lever affect. When in a corner the car will roll causing the wheel to compress, this in turn rotates the bar and pulls up on the opposite wheel causing it to compress and forcing the car to lower on the opposite side instead of raise. A thicker/stiffer bars is more affective since it has less "twist" in it.
Stiffer front bar means more understeer! Stiffer rear bar means more oversteer. When upgrading you want to do both bars in a RWD car. You can also get adjustable endlinks for preload but unless you roadrace lets not get into that. Mark

swaybars lesson
Mark, Thank you for the lesson on swaybars. I was not sure of the sole purpose of them. Now it makes perfect sense. I have a squeakey bushing in my rear swaybar and the dealer added greese fittings to stop the noise. I thought the bushings were supposed to be tight on the bar and the bushing carrier. Why do you think it's squeaking? I thought maybe the bushings were out of tolarence. Greasing them just doesn't seem right to me.
