2005-2008 Mustangs with manual transmissions...

Manual Transmission Seperator Plate "Buzz"

At cold startup, you may get a buzzing sound in the morning...When the car warms up the buzzing generally goes away.

I had recently put on a FRPP x-pipe and Stingers, I thought it might be a tightening issue...Not so...went in and described my symptoms, and the first time the service dept. said they couldn't locate a problem. I told them to keep the car overnight and check again...

Bingo...I wound up having to leave the car there for a couple of days.

If any of you have those same symptoms, its actually the Transmission Seperator Plate.

Ford Corporate:
Some 2005-2008 Mustangs built before 12/13/2007, and equipped with 4.6l engine and manual transmissions many exhibit an oil-canning or exhaust rattle/buzz around 2000-2500 rpm during first minutes of driving or cold start. Sound goes away after warm up.

Action:
The concern is caused by the separator plate, between the rear face of the block and the transmission housing, vibrating and/or contacting the flywheel.

Get it fixed! If you are still under warranty, you are eligible under provisions of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage, don't let them tell you they can't find a problem. And it should be a recall.

*Time to replace seperator plate, including time to remove and install transmission: 2.8 hrs.

Hope my time and effort to get this issue resolved can help someone else here who might have had the same issue.

Holy crap, they have to remove and reinstall the tranny for that? Man my service department is gonna love me after already rebuilding my transmission, lol!

Thanks a ton for the info man! The rattle I've got matches your description to a "T" and if it's not the exhaust just being loose, I'll have to ask about this.

common problem, do it under warranty if you want. It's the bell housing shield that buzzes, its a 2 minute DIY if you have some weather strip and the skills to loosen two bolts and retighten.. Dynomat is a even better solution.

Not sure why ford is saying it's the trans plate in this instance, I did the fix on mine, and modular users as well as stang net users have followed suit with extremely happy results. I learned the fix while at the dealer picking up some parts for a local job I was doing and by chance was schmoozing with one of the techs about the labor rates they charge.

Just so you all don't think I'm a freak, here's a link where a user fixed it with RTV. Mods if I'm in violation with the link delete it, I'm figuring numerous posts point to the DIY's there and this shouldn't hurt. Your call.

Typically you have to have an oasis report pulled at your dealer.. They give you the start date of the assembly line, and the date it rolls off completed. Many other specifics come on that report as well and it's customizable for the things you really want to know.

Emay, thanks for the post - doubly awesome if that's what it works out to be.

Redfire - thanks for clarifying that. I've been reticent about posting links that directly answer people's questions. I certainly won't post something that links to another site plug or anything like that, but knowing how I can help people because I have no freet ime and like to use Google is a giant help. I mean kills my free time. I mean helps me kill my free time and get my boss mad at me.

Are you's talking a buzz or vibration from the shifter or tranny?

"common problem, do it under warranty if you want. It's the bell housing shield that buzzes, its a 2 minute DIY if you have some weather strip and the skills to loosen two bolts and retighten.. Dynomat is a even better solution...."

-that's too funny, Emay. Ford says it took them 2.8 hours to fix to the problem. -You say it takes two minutes. Maybe they should hire you to work in Dearborn...! Nobody seemed to know what the heck I was talking about, or what to do for the problem.

Then once someone had an answer...
First to get the part to the dealer, that took two days...then to actually get the job done...another two days...then I had a check engine light/limp home mode issue driving to work right out of the dealer...
I had my car in the shop for a whole week....

On a positive note, if you are under warranty they give you a dealer courtesy car...a nice new Ford Taurus that every blue hair you pull up to at stop lights is envious of...

A Taurus? Lucky, they gave me a Forcus for the week my car was in getting the trans rebuilt. Though I've heard from some people who weren't offered a car while warranty work was being done. Guess it depends on the dealership?

I wonder how many dealerships are doing the fix Emay's talking about and charging the warranty the 2.8 hours...?

This is great news. My dealer has been unable to find the source of this noise.

Thanks for sharing

Mine has a rattle in third gear when over 2000 rpm. The more rpm's the more rattle. Shelby installs the Hurst Short Shifter. Do you guys think this is the same problem? Mines an '07.
