Gods of s197, come hither and lend me your wisdom
I'm trying to decide if I want to build my motor of go straight for the gut shot and slap on a whipple HO kit. I would like to have some peace of mind knowing that my motor will be able to withstand the extra power. I know there have been tons of successful people with just a s/c and some unfortunate ones that the motor did not last. I know the price is also about the same. All opinions welcomed.
#1-- Whipple HO kit #2-- Livernois 298ci stroker, 17cc-9.1:1 compression ratio (459KIT11-3VB) New - Livernois Motorsports - 4.6L 3-Valve 298ci Stroker Rotating Assembly - I know the stock 3v heads flow just as well as 4v. But how well would they flow with a stroker & s/c combo. - Would I be able to throw on a set of Comp Cams NSR blower cams and be done with the head/cam combo or will there be some restriction. Thanks

Get the forged rotating assembly, and get the HO kit, or a centri blower (i prefer centri, i own a centri, the power curve is sick and i romp on kenne belles and whipples from rolls) I would save the cash and just increase the psi to a good 12 or 14 and not get the cams or anything. Are you planning on doing a lot of track driving?

I say you build the motor first, but get that compression down around 8.x:1, that's better for boost. In the time between building the motor and getting a blower you can strap on a nice shot of nitrous.
I say while you are at it, go all out and get some ported heads and BBR stage II cams. God it is easy to spend other peoples money

I would just go easy on yourself and do a 14psi blower and forged rotating. Listen with motor work and more than 14psi your rear end is GOING to fail. Tranny..

How much hp do you want to make? How much do you have to spend for all the rest of the stuff to hold that hp?

Well when I go on my 4 month deployment coming this Jan-April 2009 I hope to have around $6,000 saved. Thats after saving, per diem rates, expenses being reimbursed.

I would get the Whipple and run 8-10 psi. with a safe tune and wait to get the motor built. I know its nice to have that extra insurance but the motor can wait unless you want to get both and then you can tact on another $5-10k for supporting mods. If you get the motor then you will want to turn up the boost and you will need injectors, clutch, and anything else you manage to break along the way.
If not get the motor and you really don't need heads and cams to make power. I know would also stay around 9.1 to 1 compression ratio because when your not in boost the car will be like getting a cement truck moving. I stayed with 9.3 to 1 and running 16 psi. on 93 octane with out a problem. The only reason to go lower on comperssion ratio is if you want to run 30 psi. or 20 psi. everyday on pump gas.

I would say with 10 psi. and a safe tune you can make 475 rwhp and be driving it around till you want more

or just get the whipple and a forged rotating assembly and be alittle better off, least I would assume, if you have the money for both. If not just go with what KB_charged suggested.

you can figure $9000 for the Whipple and a budget shortblock<<<<connecting rods and pistons>>>> which all you would need unless you want to step up to 20 psi. and then you can do the crankshaft. a good set of connecting rods and pistons would run you about $1500 and the Whipple $5600 + labor..If you would bring the car down here we could keep the cost a little lower and me and the ASE Tech that helped with my car can get that done with out a problem
OR I have a block I can build and charge you parts and cheap labor since I would be doing it and we could swap for your shortblock after it is done...and I can offer a 1 day--5 feet warranty...j/j but I could get you a block built for cheaper than you can buy one for

the sky since it would be a forged rotating assembly but it won't be a stroker then you would have to add block machining cost to it
Lets just say $5900 for the Whipple, $2400 for the Forged rotating assembly and labor cost would be roughly $1400 to pull motor and swap all stock parts back onto new shortblock and install supercharger for a grand total of $9700 minus shipping
