Gear Swap Please HELP!!!!
I have been fighting this gear swap for two days now. I'm working on my 07 GT. I'm trying to get the pinion gear to the crush sleeve. I'm only able to suck the pinion shaft within 1/8 inch of play. I tried using a 600ftlb impact with no luck, broke two screw drivers(as stops), and finally called the Ford Racing Tech line. They told my to wire wheel the splines. I did it third times with no luck. I even put the pinion gear in the press to see if the yoke would go all the way down. It did fine, but no hand tools can get it to suck in.
What's left for me to try? Any one run into this?? Please help, it's driving me nuts... Thanks pqt |

Generally the 600ft lb impact will do the work, mine was sort of easy.
A few years back on my monte I used a little heat on the outside of the housing to soften things up, that's a hack though. I definately don't recommend it.. |

impact wrench, a regular rachet or breaker bar makes it real hard
If you use a breaker bar try using a pipe wrench to hold the pinion flange but it takes alot to get it to start to crush. I also had to put the crush sleeve in a vise to get it to start compressing then installed it and sucked it down with a breaker bar

what you need to do is "un-crush" the old crush sleeve with a hammer, and re-use it. makes life SOOOO much easier.

?????? Explain how and why you would want to do that, the crush sleeve is a 1 time use item

I can't even get the yoke to the crush sleeve. There is still about an 1/8 in play. When I take the pinion nut off after impacting it forever, I can still see an 1/8 in of the grooves inside in yoke. So I'm not even close to the c-sleeve.
I thought about heat, but I think the dust guard on the yoke is plastic. I thought about sanding/grinding the pinion splines. I guess I'll have to take the rear out of the car and put a pipe on it. Is it really this hard to get it on?? My friend just did his TransAm and he used an impact and it went on fine. Thanks pqt |
