Eleanor Carnage

Well, I took on my brothers cobra on the way to a local cruise spot and polished off the transmission tail shaft something fierce. Went 5th to 3rd at about 80 mph in an attempt to get the jump on him, considering his power level I know I was going to need the advantage. I got out front and held him off only to see a ton of white smoke on the slow down from 140+.

Tail shaft is completely cracked nearly all the way around the circumference. You play, you pay as I always say..

Here's some shots of what I found in disassembly, hope to be back on the road by Tuesday if the parts are available, gonna see if a friend of mine has the ability to do a warranty ticket for the part and me do the work. Not likely to fly, but worth a shot - part is 420.00 on average:

Thank god no damage internally:

The crack-

sorry to hear that man. At least you took him. if i can get you the part let me know, ill give it to you as cheap as i can. Would love to say I sold a part that it is in your car.

You guys are crazy 5th to 3rd at 80. If i did that with my 4.10s id crack a lot more then that.

Depends sometimes on how you do it, 5 to 3rd at 80mph with 4.10's is a no no.

Stock gears, and engaging the clutch entirely before mashing the gas and you should be fine.

Honestly, looking at the casting of this part, I won't do a lot of things I have been doing in my driving style any longer. It's not a very structurally sound piece when looking from the insides.

damn oem parts at 10% over cost, me and you need to talk bro. 5th to 3rd with 4.10s i do it at 65. thats why i cruise at 65 so im ready. And if i happen to be cruiseing a little faster and i see someone roll up i slow down. Its fun to slow down while they are next to you, kinda stall them like your talking to them or something, sometimes I think some guys dont even know what your doing. Then you hammer it.

Emay, From a mechanical engineer, that looks like a manufacturing defect. the part seemed to be overstressed from the factory, and thus when under rotational loading the part did not have adaquate webbing.

Seriously, you should be able to get that warrantyed....

Maybe...

well 07stanggt..........if i can ever talk my parts dept. into lettin' me be a sort of "supplier" to people such as yourself, i could save people some serious money........for now i will just have to be "you need a part, i might be able to help" kinda guy........in other words I can get the parts cheap for myself, but they want it to be for "myself" . They dont want me givin' em to the customers at discounted rates, that would be costing ford money (like their parts arent overpriced enough).....but yea, if you ever need some O.E.M. parts, look me up.

Sooner, I completely agree, it's not all that well made. I'm hoping the warranty will be possible. I'm going to make a few calls tomorrow and try to work a couple angles.

ford's not the most easy to deal with on warranty work. Lots of times sending a rep out to look at things before buying in. Obviously they don't have that luxury here, and this car will never see a dealership, they couldn't rack this car without damaging it let alone do the work without it requiring 3 returns on my part to get things right.

If I have to pay, that's what I'll do. If I can get it warrantied that would be best, just not keeping my hopes up about it..

If this was more towards the fall of this year, I'd drop the coin on a 6 speed. I'm just not in a position right now to swallow that nut. I'm hard on the car, so hard even that people question how things last. So I'll just repair this, and adjust my driving style a tad until I get finances in line for the trans I want, done right. I won't nickle and dime it.

I'm going to take the spyder shaft and have it spun to make sure it's still in balance, there was a shutter in the middle of 5th gear that I think aided in this carnage. Also going to make sure the pinion angle is still okay with the LCA relocation bracket adjustments I made over the winter.

Sweet... You know what they say about fast cars. You work on them for three hours for every hour you drive them.
