NSR cam write up.
Here it is guys. This is a write up instaling NSR Comp stage 2 cams in a 2007 Mustang GT. Let me tell you guys somthing right off the bat. If you are not well versed with hand tools and have alot of patience, stop reading now and take your car to a shop. This instal takes patience. I gaurante you will not be doing it in 3 hours! It took me 5 and a half...and I was taking my time so I didint mess anything up. I will be showing pics in here but you will have to read to fully understand what you have to do to do this right. So now for all the wrench heads that are still reading this, lets go.
![]() This is what you will need to do the job. Set of cams, Cam phaser bolts (old ones cant be reused because they are torque stretched) and the two Ford specialty tool. One is a timing chain wedge and the other is a valve spring comppresor. I will gwt into how to use these in a bit. You should also have a torque wrench that reads both foot and inch pounds...and some lube...I used motor oil. ![]() Go ahead and unhook the coil on plugs and the fuel injectors...they are just push clips but be gental..i have broke two so far by switching spark plugs. Once they are unhooked remove the coil on plug, there is one bolt for each. Leave the plugs IN, they dont have to be removed. Once the coils are off remove the cam cover. TIP. Unbolt the oil dipstick, it attaches to the block below the cover. This will make it much easier to remove the cover ![]() Close up of where the dipstick bolts to the block...it is undone in this pic This is what you should be looking at now. ![]() Now it is time to insert the timing chain wedge (yellow thing on a stick) one side is straight and one side is tapered so look at how the timing chain is running...it is opposite depending on what side you are doing...I started with the drivers or LEFT side first. I also marked the chain and sproket with a marker to make sure i was going to be lined up when reinstalling. MAKE SURE THE WEDGE IS IN TIGHT ![]() Look closley and you an see the wedge inbetween the chain...notice how the top of the chain is rounded. ![]() Mark the chain and sproket now before undoing it from the cam Now go ahead and remove the cam phaser bolt in the front of the cam...be gental...you dont want to roll the engine doing this...it might loosen the wedge. Once that is done simply slide the spocket off the end of the cam and let it sit there on the chain...other installs show removing the sprocket but it is not needed. It can sit there all together and will make reinstalling easier. Once that is done remove the cam journals. I started at the outside and worked my way in untill i was left with the middle one...there will be tension on the bolts all the way off because the cam i under pressure from the springs so be gental her and work back and forth from to pto bottom bolts to remove it evenly. Once that is done it should look like this. ![]() Now simply lift the cam out of its journals. ![]() Now simply pull of the cam follower which just sit there...they look like roller rockers. KEEP THEM IN ORDER. Also the journals are numbered 1 thru 5 with < arrows like that that represent the front of the engine. Keep an eye on them fro re assembly. ![]() Now you lube up the new cam and install it...leave the followers OUT. put the journals back on in proper order with the arrows facing the front of the engine 1 being closest to the front of the engine. Torque the cam journal caps to 89 Inch pounds. Now rotate the cam so the keyway is lined up with the sprocket and slide it on the cam. DO NOT REMOVE THE WEDGE YET. Now go get your new phaser bolt and screw it in and torque it to 30 foot pounds...then turn it 90 degrees more...this stretch torques the bolt and makes it unusable again. Now the motor is going to try and roll while you are torquing the bolt.I just put a ratchet on the crank bolt and held it from rolling while I torques it. I also marked my phaser bolt with a line after i torqued to 30 so i knew where 90 degrees was. ![]() New cam istalled ![]() Phaser bolt ![]() Notice the white line facing vertical on the bolt ![]() After I torqued it 90 degrees...your done. Now remove your wedge from the chain...Pull hard it wont want to come easy! Refer to page 2 for rest of write up.

I've never done anything that extreme and I think I can do it. Just follow the instructions and read it several times and you'll be golden.
hey 07 Pro, why did you install the cam followers after the cam and cam journals were installed. Is it due to the spring tension

yes...if you dont and you mange to get the cam on under tention....you have to line the cam up with the sprocket...which is locked...which means if the cam is off you have to turn it....how do you do that when its under all that tention from the springs...thers no where to put a wrench on them...

I guess I am stupid... I read it twice and didn't see where you put the followers back in.. looks like they were in before you installed the phaser bolt????
