gear whine???

i just recently had a set of frrp 3.73 gears installed in my 06 GT (auto) and i wanted to know what was causing the gear whine whenever i let off the throttle then about 35mph it stops. i always thought you can hear gear whine when your on the throttle not when your slowing down. can anyone tell me whats causing this? thanks

i wouldint touch gears myself...and i do all my own wrenching...take it to a shop...if you havent broke the gears in too bad they might be able to adjust the backlash.

Super stang, you have gotten the dreaded coast whine. It's not only a backlash issue. The same sort of whine can occur on improper bearing preload. You may want to ask your installer exactly how he went about the preload on them, sometimes that is a difficult conversation because immediately your placing blame on there skills. Wether it's a lack of backlash issue, or a preload issue, you'll get a coast whine.

Your installer is likely to say, "I don't preload the bearing via torque spec, I do it by feel". This is common, but these s197 rear ends are finicky and will make noise in both scenerios. Feel out your installer, spec is 16-26 in lbs.

I have the same issue on mine, Super. My installer told me it was improper backlash or bearing preload, as Emay said. Fortunately he's a stand up guy, and I don't have to worry about playing games with him to get it right.

yeah emay is right about what could be wrong with it.

but if they are going to fix it, have them check if there is any wear on them.

you may only have 180 miles on them but that could still mess them up bad enough that you cant use them

alot of ppl dont liek to mess with there own gears but i dont think that they are that hard to do, they do take time, but if somethign is wrong at least you know what you did.

if someone else did it, you have know idea what backlash, pre load, shims etc they used.
