Gears

Has anyone put there own rear end gears in? I have toyed around with them but it's been years ago. My 06 only has 5K on it so would I really need the seal kit? Also what is the shims all about?

I would not recommend putting your own gears in...

The shims are to get the angle just right...

Anytime you open up the rear-end of a car I reccomend new bearings and seals...Rather be safe then sorry...And since you are going to be right there why not...

Had 4:10's put in my 05. The mechanic said he would more than likely need the bearing which he did. If you use Ford Racing parts they will come with a small variety of shims that will probably do the job. As far as gaskets, they use a cyclicone sealant so don't bother but you should let a tech handle this job.

yes from all that I've read, installing the gears is just not worth the amount of time and effort required. Much faster and easier to let someone else do it and it's not too expensive for the install.
