Surging at idle with FRPP Hot Rod Cams
I need some serious input here...
So I got the cams installed today, and flashed the car with Bamachips 93 Race tune (made for the FRPP cams), and while it does run good at speed, during idle it almost stalls. It goes from around 700 RPM down to 400 RPM and back... continually... just surging and surging. My lights even dim when it gets down to the low end. Also, when I'm cruising at speed and then put it in neutral to slow down because of a red light or whatever, the idle drops down to about 250 RPM and then goes back up to about 500 RPM... where it stays just fine, miraculously, until I stop completely, then its back to the surging. What the hell does all of this mean?!?!

I emailed Doug to see if he has any insight into this. Until then, if anyone has any ideas, let me know.

Let me clarify by stating that I did not install the cams myself. I had a FRPP dealer install the cams. I wouldn't know how to check timing, and I don't know how to check cam phasers (or even know what they are).

tune
sounds like the tune isnt hooking up with the camms properly. the timing is controlled by our computer, via ur new tune , doug should have a cure for this

well you should make sure they broke the cams in right and the timing can be off one tooth.
if you cam phasers were not reinstalled you would know |

yes it could be from the tune, take you tune off and see how the car runs

OK, I can try that in the morning.
I was searching for more possible causes of surging and read something about vacuum lines. Any thoughts on that? I just really hope this isn't an internal issue because I know it's going to be like pulling teeth to get the dealership to open her up again for free.

if you take the tune out., your car with be fine, the VCT will pull enought timing so nothing will be hurt, if the car idles good then you know its the tune, if not then its somehitng else

yeah its possible that a vacuum line could be off, cause you said it fine at cruising but not at idle, the car needs more air when you are cruising or wot so the car just thinks its fine, but does the car hesitate when you go to step on it???

Well, I haven't really stepped on it yet because I didn't want to take it to rough at first. Wasn't sure if there was some sort of break in period or anything. Also, its raining like hell, so I can' really get traction.
So you think I should "Return to stock" with my XCAL and see if the issue persists?

yes, return it to stock, and see if it changes, if it does its your tune, if not it is something else.

I just checked anything and everything that looked like a vacuum hose, and it all appeared normal to me.
They were running the car at about that RPM for about 20 mins while I waited for finalization of paperwork, so I assume they are broke in. Why am I starting to regret getting these installed at the dealership now? Uggghhh...

Did you have your LT's installed at the same time? If so, did you tell doug about this change as well?

I will return it to stock tomorrow morning and verify. My neighbors are probably already pissed off at me enough tonight...
Towelly - My long tubes are not installed yet. The tune I am using is for stock exhaust manifolds.
