Tuner as a power limiter when taking your car in for service

I'm sure I'm not the only one to think of it. I had to leave my car at the alignment shop after installing the Eibachs. The guy working there was drooling when he saw the car. I'm just as paranoid as the other guy about my car, so I was thinking, if I had my tuner (next on the list) I could have used it to limit the revs at a ridiculous 3500-4000 rpms. Anyone ever done that? Can you set it that low? (Never used one) I know Corvettes have a special "valet" key for such cases that limits power and RPM.

I know I could have just stayed there, but I couldn't this time. Even then, he probably has to take it for a spin to see if everything's allright, steering centered, pulling to one side, etc. And I guess taking a customer along is a no-no for insurance purpose and all...
Guess I'm just antsy to get her back...

good idea and it should work cause tuners can adjust the rev limiter

You could set the rev limiter to 3500rpm and the speed governor to 55mph

Or you could look your service manager in the eye and say "I know how many miles are on the car, and how much fuel is in the tank."

I do that with my 91, when it goes in for an alignment I put the 2k pill in my 6al box... You could also use your tuner to adj your gears to some outragous gearing ( your speedo will be wasy off with this though ) and you would put practically no miles on it...

I don't think he'd be the problem, the tech on the other hand... And they do have to take it for a spin to check things out or you'd get on his case for doing a half ass job in the case something was obvious when driving...
It's a no win situation. I didn't know you could also limit speed...
I'm just paranoid and it got me thinking....

That would put the PCM in to safe mode, 1FF

Nah, changing the gear ratio in the tuner would.

Because the pcm interacts with the speedometer and rpms, and when it senses that they aren't where they should be, it goes in to safe mode.

I see... I have been runnig around with the wrong ratio speedo gear in my 91 for 4 years now. But I dont care that the speedo is wrong cause i can see it on that giant board at the end of the 1/4...

Two different ways to limit speed.Zip is changing gear ratios to fool the computer into thinking it's hitting top speed and Fox is setting the top speed at 55 mph...
I think is where the confusion is at...

I always wondered about this also. I'm worried about leaving my car with the dealer or anyone for that matter. I can just imagine them flying down the highway with it...

No Zip was right. I was trying to fool the computer to think the vehicle was going slower than it really is so it would accumulate less miles that it really is.

unless i have a major (1,000$ +) repair im not leaving my car at the dealer id rather pay that use those weasels under warranty.

id say rather than play games try to find a shop where you can trust the mechanic. if you dont trust them to drive your car i certainly wouldnt trust them to work on the car!

Well I don't do my wheel alignment myself and am not in the habit of having alignments done on a regular basis. So, no, I did not know anybody in the field.
Sometimes you just gotta have someone work on your car. I was just wondering if someone else had ever thought about this and if it would work.
(using the tuner to limit RPM and speed).

I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR A ALIGNMENT AND WHEN I PICKED IT UP THERE WAS 12 MILES MORE ON ODOMETER, I GUESS HE HAD TO DO SOME 100 MPH TESTING TO MAKE SURE IT DIDNT PULL TO THE LEFT!!1 LOL,

i did this with my xcal II and you can't set it below like 5700 or something like that. it's been about 4 month since i did it. that is for drive neutral can go lower though. the speed limiter can go below 60 i think, but can't remember how low.
