Pinging
I'm running a Brenspeed 93 octane tune. I fill up at different gas stations all the time, so maybe it's low quality gas, but on at least 2 occasions I have heard pinging when I'm running hard at WOT (like accelerating onto the highway or playing around on an open stretch of road from a stop.
Is this bad gas or is the tune to aggressive?

your knock sensors shuld pick up pinging and retard your timing accordingly...shouldint they?

Pinging with Brenspeed 93 tune and 93 octane gas
I tried loading the 91 tune with 93 gas and the pinging was not as bad, but still there. I then loaded the 87 tune with 93 gas and the pinging was gone.
I called Brenspeed and talked to someone (not brent) and he said either they would pull some timing out of my tunes for me or I could run the 87 tune. he said to keep running 93 gas with the 87 tune, and that the 87 tune would compensate for the 93 gas. Is there any advantage to running 93 gas with the 87 Brenspeed tune versus just running 87 gas? Tonight, I installed the 93 tune again (fresh tank of 93 gas) and pulled 1 degree of timing out of the tune (globally, across all RPM ranges). I ran the car up to 6K rmp about 10 times in 1st and 2nd gear and there was no pinging most runs, although on 1 or 2 runs I thought I might have heard a tiny bit of pinging just above 4K rpm. Should I try pulling another 1 degree of timing above 4K rpm? I have no idea how much timing the brenspeed 93 tune adds over the 87 tune or over the stock tune. By pulling 1-2 degrees of timing am I screwing up the tune? The 93 tune didn't seem to ping at all from April until recently, although 2 things have changed since then. First, it's 100 degrees every day, and second I added JBA axle back mufflers a while back. Could the axle backs be causing the pinging? The car runs noticable faster on the 93 tune, so I'd like to use it if at all possible.

I would rather leave the timing and add some fuel, I guess your tweaking with an xcal so I would datalog the car and see what is happening. How did the car feel during the pulls with the degree removed?

i run with 4 degrees removed so i can run nitrous...i just compinsated by adding cams
...but seriously ...before the cams my but dyno did notice some loss but not bad overall.

The car pulled strong with 1 degree pulled out. That's -1 degree from the Brenspeed 93 tune, which I'm sure is advanced from stock. But I think I may have still heard a little ping on one or two runs, so I might try pulling 1 more degree out.
I could make the fuel a little richer but I don't know what I'm doing so I'm hesitant to fool with the AF mixture in the X3.

I would datalog the mass air count, load, rpm, speed, knock, coolant temp, and stft bank 1 and 2...then post the file up and we can take a look at it...and you might want to email it to Brenspeed for him to check or he might want you to datalog more parameters to see what is happening.

Unfortunately I have a SCT X3. SCT customer service/tech support is a joke (a forum that nobody from the company answers is their idea of tech support) and their user manual and website don't explain how to get data from the X3 to my computer (I don't have a laptop).
I downloaded the Live Link software from SCT's website but Live Link doesn't even recognize the X3 (it only has an option for the XCal2 and some other devices). I can't get the data from the car to the computer or I'd post it.

I have heard from people that the gas quality now is shit..like 93 is 88 and stuff like that and what ur saying it makes sense

+1...i live in ohio and there was just a big stink in the papers about how ohio didnt re-up the octane certifications, so basically theres no way for me to know if the 93 im buying is actually 93, or is 87.

I have the X3 and the "Livewire Updater" program installed on my PC and it works fine, although I've only used it to download new tunefiles to my X3. I see a "Transfer File" function on the Livewire updater program which is what I've been told transfers datalog files from X3 to computer but never used it.

Livewire Updater, Live Link, etc... nothing will recognize my X3 I just get connection errors with the device. And I don't know if SCT supports Vista.

I have been told by numerous people NOT to use octane boost in new Mustangs because it can cause serious problems with the spark plugs.

So I pulled out 2 degrees of timing globally tonight and ran the car, no pinging. Still pulls hard. I'll call brenspeed tomorrow and ask them if this sounds like a good compromise.

But they give instructions on getting Vista to run non-Vista specific programs through compatibility settings. SCT's got a pretty thin knowledgebase... but they have a knowledgebase. A lot of the performance car part companies (and vendors!) would do well to implement knowledgebases or extensive FAQs -- they reduce the company's overhead on support related inquiries if they allow their customers to do their own research....

Having the same problem. Started when temps got into the 80s. Loaded the 91 Brenspeed tune and the pinging stopped completely. I tried the SCT 93 tune and that didn't ping but much less performance. I emailed Brenspeed on Saturday - I'n sure they'll send me a modified tune but looks like you found the answer. Please keep us informed.
