3.73 vs 4.10 automatic
New member here with a 3.31 STOCK auto GT. Been reading up on gears between all the sites and can't decide between 3.73 or 4.10. Professionals say 3.73 due to auto gearing but individuals says just go 4.10.
I'm not going the SC route due to just waiting a few years to get a cobra. I will be getting a CAI/Tune at the same time. M - F is all city driving while the weekend is used for highway cruises. It is my DD and I will not be tracking this car. Any suggestions or opinions, please fire away

I had 4.10's in my 07 Mustang GT
And now I have 3.73's in my 08 Bullitt. This is my opinion, The 4.10 where to much of a gear, I was in 1st gear for a very short time! 2nd gear was awesome! It was almost like I was driving 3-speed. To me the 373 gears are the perfect balance. The 410 was great for tire burning!!!

if you're mostly in the city with a lot of stop and go light to light. the 4.10's will give you a bit better mileage because it won't have to work as hard to get the car moving. on the highway people i've read about have seen very very small drops in mileage. everyone pretty much suggests the 4.10's over the 3.73's with the exception of a few. i haven't bothered because i know i'm going to be upgrading the rearend and don't want to buy parts twice.

First off I will say welcome to moddedmustangs. I have an auto as well and I have been tossing the gears back and forth for a while now. I have decided to go 4.10's simply because I don't want to get 3.73's and wonder what 4.10's would have felt like. My car only gets driven about 10 miles a day and only sees the interstate about twice a year. I have only talked to one person who didn't like the 4.10's in his automatic which was Doug at Bamachips. He said the transmissions aren't set up for that low of gear. With that being said about every magazine article you read with a car thats an auto has 4.10's some naturally aspirated, some supercharged. I guess its just different strokes for different folks. I wish some people with autos would chime in and let us know about their gear choices.

I have 3.90s from pro 5.0 and they whine like no other. I just popped for some FRPP 3.73s cuz I am going to get a S/C. I am still debating whether to get them installed or wait and see If I want to trade in for an 09 GT

did consider 3.90 but rather stick with frpp gears...i know the difference from 3.31 to 3.73 is huge but is 3.31 to 4.10 worth it? i'll never go beyond 120mph but on the freeway, i don't want to run out of oomph...

it won't run out of oomph. your car doesn't have the power to do so.

will there be traction issues with stock tires and suspension with 4.10? will you HAVE to get control arms and larger tires?

I have 4.10 gears and love them. I have no traction issues at all. You should definately get 4.10s. It was a big difference when I did the swap.

i realized when i first got mine it would've been cheaper for me to be paying for 2 car payments. 1. my stang and 2. a little used car that gets damn good mileage for a dd. i drive a lot. 32grand in the year i was driving it.

def agree with you psycho bob, i do have a sc300 turbo on the side if gas gets out of hand.
i probably drive 12,000 miles a year with the mustang and do not drive in snow. just want a fun street car without sacrafising a sheep like i did with the sc300 ![]() goal for the N/A application is get it under 13 sec, 1/4 mile, without destroying the transmission or engine. |
