With rising fuel prices and increased environmental concerns pushing customers towards smaller cars, Ford is well aware of the negative image its brawny Mustang projects on new car buyers. Due late next year for the 2010 model year, Ford will be updating its iconic muscle car with a number of changes to its exterior as well as a complete revamp of its powertrain line-up to appease those concerned about fuel-economy.

Though the updated model will share the same the overall length and width as the current model, the car will be styled to look smaller and more athletic. Speaking with Automotive News, Ford’s North American design director, Peter Horbury, explained that the new car’s lines have been designed to make it look as though the wheels are “further out, further forward and further rearward”.

Horbury points out that the bulky and old-tech look of the Challenger, and even the upcoming Camaro, will turnoff customers in a climate where buying trends are largely motivated by fuel economy or at least the perception of fuel economy.

As for the engine line-up, Ford has reportedly sped up the introducing of its next-generation engines because of the tough new CAFE fuel-economy regulations. The 4.0L V6 engine will remain, however the V8 line-up will be replaced with a new EcoBoost V6 engine with V8 power levels as well as a new 5.0L SOHC V8.

There talking more around 415...

"But here's the shock news: We hear there is a faction at Ford seriously contemplating fitting the new twin turbo EcoBoost V-6 to the 2010 Mustang. As they try to figure out how to meet 35mpg CAFE by 2020, Ford engineers are wondering whether the V-8 has a long term future. The EcoBoost engine, which is currently scheduled to debut in a performance version of the Fusion, could be the more fuel efficient alternative for Mustang in the long term. Depending on spec, the EcoBoost is capable of up to at least 415hp, and has the torque to match a regular V-8."

Although these new Eco engines sound like they will perform well (I've heard a little bit about them at work), I think IMO that many enthusiasts will be upset over the loss of a V8. It's just part of such a car's history to have that roaring sound that only a V8 has. The new mustang is suppose to have a little bit of a redesign as well right?

Think 2010 will be the last year for S197, until the re-design takes place. Who knows though. Could end up like the Fox generation and go a few more years.

Ya, there making it "look" smaller but everything I believe is the same.

I heard they are no longer using the 6 cylinder twin turbo application. They are sticking with an 8 cylinder

Yeah there's been too much speculation here and elsewhere from "people in the know". It's driving me up a wall!

If there's no V8, then I'll be content to keep my S197 in tip top shape and buy a new something shiny for a DD. Maybe one of those BMW convertible roadsters with a V8....

I just noticed you were from IL... how far South and I agree 100% about the V8 theory. Just gotta have that V8 sound!
