Aftermarket shifter lower boot.

For those who have an aftermarket shifter, did you install the lowerboot? If so, how did you do it? I can't seem to get mine on. If you did install it, do you still hear the trany winding (I think that is the noise I am hearing)?

For me the entire installation, including the lower boot, was easier by removing the entire center console first. That's seems like a pain the ass but it's not a difficult job.

I removed the center console, but I still could not get the lower boot to go all the way around.

remove the console to to get the lower boot on?

push the rubber boot all the way down through the hole and then lightly go around pulling up on it section by section until the top lip pops over the metal. If you try to push the bottom lip in its a pain in the ass just shove it down in there and pull it out.

And if you dont put the lower boot on noise wont be your problem, your console will get so hot that it will burn your arm.

I tried pulling it over section by section, but I still couldn't get it on. Maybe more patients is needed. Thanks for the heads up about the center console getting too hot.

I know with the new edge stangs some models require cutting of the boot. This may be needed with your piece. check that out.

your talking about getting it to seal around the hole in the bottom of your car right? or are you talking about something else?

try putting some soap and water on it. i dont know i have mine on and off so many times now that its easy.

like i said dont go from the top down, thats a pain.

I did more that just seal it around the hole. I pulled it over the shift assembly. The boot looks like it's supposed to do that. I don't know - maybe it's not, but that's what I did. It wasn't easy finagling that. I don't remember but I may have even pulled it down from underneath the car while it was up on stands. No problem at all just getting the boot to seal around the hole.

I removed the center console not just because of the boot, but manipulating the whole shifter in there was easier that way too.

i dont know im confused.

yea it has a hole in the top, that goes over your upper stick, its going to be right above the 2 screws that connect the upper stick to the lower stick. then the bottom of the boot seals around the hole in the car right?

yea from underneath it would be easier to the pull it down, but i do it from in the car and that way its easy just to push it through and pull back up on it.

heh heh I think we're all confused!

The hole in the lower boot looks like it's just about the right size to fit over the actual shifter assembly, as if it was meant to protect that from road dust. There is a lip on the boot about 1/3rd up from the bottom of the boot that seals around the hole - that part's easy. Getting the bottom hole in the boot to cover the shifter - that's not easy. Again, I don't know for a fact that it's supposed to cover the assembly, but it sure looks like it should.

Not knowing for sure, I guess I would rather err on the side of caution and have it covered than not.

I doubt either of us has it upside down. I agree that the upper hole in the boot makes a tight seal around the stick where you bolt it to the shifter. That is the smaller hole.

It sounds to me like we have them on the same except I also pulled the bottom boot hole down over the shifter assembly, any maybe you didn't do that. Either way, the lower boot is still going to seal against the undercarriage of the car. At some point I'll take a pic from underneath and post it in this thread too but I doubt I'll get to do that tonight.

I think the arrow is supposed to be pointing down. With the arrow down, the part number is right side up.

I can't seem to get the cover to go over the assembly. My console does not seem to be heating up. I guess even with the lower boot not all the way over the assembly, it is protected enough.

If I do get the lowerboot all the way over the metal part, will that quiet the noise I am hearing from the tranny, or is the noise the nature of the beast of the hurst shifter?

wish i could answer your question. your post made me realize i dont have that over the shifter assembly either. never did with any shifter. i thought you were talking about sealing it around the hole in the car. ill play with it tomorrow, im throwing a kooks H pipe on the car to make some sound clips. ill tell you if it makes a difference.

I guess I'm not sure what noise you are referring to. You do hear the gear clunk into place when you shift but there is not a constant noise from the transmission when you are driver. Road noise is pretty well dampened but that probably wouldn't be any different without the boot covering the assembly either - as long as the boot is covering the undercarriage hole.

My thought in covering the assembly was to protect it from road grime. Otherwise it's exposed wide out in the open.

I'll look again, but I think there is still a hole exposed, hence why I might be hearing the constant noise. I think dynamat might help.

I installed the dynamat. I hope it works. I put down two layers and used a blow dryer. I guess you are supposed to roll it, but in a tight space where the shifter is, I don't see that happening.
