Questions about FRPP Hot Rod cams
I'm thinking about trying to get a set of the hot rod cams for my car right now and was wondering if they would work fine with my 3.55 gears or what the recommended gear ratio is. I'd like to just stick with the 3.55 since I paid for the option. Also is there any new info on the gains and/or losses with the cams yet from the people with them or how they atleast feel while driving? The car is my DD so I can't lose much gas mileage (I'm at about 17ish city and highway) or cruising power. Lastly what other parts would be needed for an install (not tool wise because I'll let a shop do that).
I know people are saying not to get cams for sound and Comp Cams make more pwer and stuff like this and I don't wanna start some kind of war over anything. But I like the sound of the hot rods and power isn't everything to me because I don't plan on going to the track much or anything. I want something that sounds good and makes some power without losing too mush of anything. |

Tribaltek here has the FRPP hot rods and is planning on uploading a video sometime this year, right Tribal? :p
There haven't been any wars over FRPP vs. Comp cams, but even mentioning 3.55 vs 4.10s or 3.73s can be asking for it around here. (If you're doing an even blend of city/highway, then you probably won't notice a change in gas mileage with 4.10s vs 3.55s. At least that's what everyong is telling me!)Good luck and the cams should be awesome either way!

They are hard to find in stock some where i think. Radmustangs has custom grind from comp that sound just as sick as the hot rod cams.

as far as parts, i would order:
1 (ea) M-6550-3v (cam set) 1 (ea) LH cam cover gasket 1 (ea) RH cam cover gasket 2 (ea) sprocket bolts (one time use) i've read that you'll want to get a tune and currently bama is providing them.

if you like the sound of the hot rod cams get them. they do sound sweet. tribaltek posted something about 25mpg on the highway with the hot rod cams and 4.10s. gears with the stock cams on this car is a must IMHO so it goes without saying that gears with those cams would be nice, but im sure you could get away with your 3.55s.
Power wise I talked to justin at jpc before i got my comp cams installed. the infamous video (see below) is his, he said he picked up 25hp at the wheels on that car and i forget what he said about torq. I can tell you that i played with that car on the vid and got him beat, but there are plenty of ways for you to even the playing field in the acceleration and speed department, power is only a part of the equation and cams only a part of that. the difference is small between the two so get what makes you happy. i think tribal said he didnt lose a lot down low and athometech said he felt a little lose down low but nothing big. If you cant find these and are intersted in a custom grind see the vid below this one. But i would try to get your hands on some hot rods first.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULeWq...uber-cams.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULeWq...uber-cams.html Last edited by 07stanggt; July 29th, 2008 at 11:02 PM. |

here is tribals video of his hot rods. he just doesnt have one with his new basani axle backs. he had pypes in this vid. but the JPC car has a full bassani exhuast so he switched.
Plus i dont know why silvers stangs vid is just showing up as a link and not a pic of the vid. Last edited by 07stanggt; July 29th, 2008 at 11:10 PM. |

videos can be deceiving, quality of camera and how you upload it so forth. the JPC car also has long tubes, 0/R x and bassani race axle backs on that vid tribal had pypes mid muffler i think and i dont know if he is o/r or not. that is why he changed his exhuast to sound more like the video.
most people neeeded to do tunes with those hot rod cams. doug at bamachips emailed a tune to tribal to get it running right. it was surging before that. |

The techs at FRPP claim that no tuning is needed but they won't make any power gains without the tune. Sounds like tune required to me then. My car is going on a Mustang dyno for a baseline today and the install should start tonight. I will keep you guys posted.

Sorry, I'm just seeing this thread now. I'll try to cover everything.
YES you ABSOLUTELY need a new tune for these. Doug's tune is working great for me, so for a mail order tune, he's the person to go with. One day I'm actually going to get it on a dyno and have a custom tune done, and then we will know what these cams can really do. I had 3.55's for the first week or two with the cams. While decent on the highway, starting out in 1st gear with those cams is not easy/fun. The 4.10's absolutely woke up the cam/motor and made 1st a breeze again (although other people still stall my car, lol). I HIGHLY suggest... nay... demand... you get 4.10's ![]() Mileage is something we all worry about with $4/gallon gas, but if you are easy on the car when you aren't hot shottin', racing, etc, then you can do very well with MPG. I get right around 27mpg on the highway at 60mph. This is with cams, 4.10's, and everything else in my signature. Seeing as Ford claims the Mustang makes 25mpg stock with 3.31's, I don't feel too bad about the mileage I get with my car ![]() ![]() Ah, you might be taller, but I probably spend more time in the gym lifting heavy ass weights ![]() And yes, I will try to get the video with the Bassani's today!!!

Oh... good luck finding one of these cams right now. They're harder to find than Hoffa!

Has anyone who has installed the Hot Rod Cams had a dyno done and can attest to the gains in torque and rwhp? If it's been posted I must of missed it. Thanks.
