Gear oil change

I had my 4.10s installed about 3-4 months ago. Am I supposed to have the gear oil changed after a certain amount of time?

Thanks. I thought I read somewhere that it's recommended, but my installer didn't mention it.

When I had my 3:73s installed my installer told me to change it after 30k miles. I didn't ask what to use, that's like 2yrs away.

Did you change the gear oil in your axle or tranny right after you bought the car? No reason, right? So why do it after chaging the gear ratio?

AMSOIL Article - Change Gear Lube After Break-In Period for Long Differential Life

this talks about the differential and changing the oil soon after the break in period for longer life of the gears and the diff. the rear end oil has no filter so contaminents just sit in there. most of the damage comes in the break in period where the gears are mating, so very small shavings just stay in there and are not filtered out. it's probly ok to leave it alone, but i think it is a better option to change it soon after the break in period. now i'm not saying my way is the best way. it's just a more cautious approach, hopefully leading to longer gear life.

You're right, the shavings do stay in there till you drain and fill, but the tolerances aren't very tight, not like in your engine. It's a matter of personal preference, but it's not required.
