Hurst shifter rattle question

I've had the new Hurst shifter in the car for a little while now (not more than 2 months). Recently I started noticing it rattling at rpms above 4k in 2nd and 4th gear. I thought maybe it was vibrating against the shift stops so I backed them all the way out so they are not touching.

Also checked all screws and bolts - nothing is loose. What I do notice is this: In neutral I can get some up and down play in the stick if I pull up on it. Probably about 1/8 inch. Also get it in 2nd and 4th, but not in 1st, 3rd, and 5th.

Is it supposed to have that up and down play in it, or is something likely wrong with it?

long tube headers and cams will fix the problem.

Was waiting to see if someone else answered but since you got a bump ill throw my hat in.

IF, and i say IF, everything is tight, the upper stick and everything below. its probably the coupling in the knob. its fairly common that it rattles.

I have found that if you really crank the knob on tight it makes it worse.

My old hurst did exactly what your describeing in second and fourth. got on my nerves so bad i got a pro 5.0.

when the new billet shifter came out i wanted it so i put one in. At first no rattle, then i did start to notice a rattle here or there, nothing major and my car is a lot louder then before now that i have headers and cams and the magnapacks.

I put a black shifter knob on when i got them in stock it doesnt rattle at all.

Im not saying this becuase the black knob is the trick, im sure they are the same just painted. Im just saying some knobs will do it and some wont. i also just tightened the black knob hand tight.

Thanks for the bump and replies. I guess I've got the ball on there pretty tight. Yes, definitely ALL screws and nuts and bolts have been checked and all are tight. I would be relieved to think it's just the knob that is the issue.

What about the up and down play I mentioned? Should there be any? Is that part of the spring mechanism so it is normal?

I checked my stock shifter out of the car and there is no upward play in it.

Mine does it to... dont worry just normal drive live harmonics... the hurst is more solidly built doesnt absorb as much as the stocker.

but mine does the EXACT same thing you are mentioning

It's designed to do that after the shifter achieves the break-in period.

j/k

Got about 13,419 shifts (yea, I keep track) on my New Hurst with black knob and no rattles.

It sounds like the metal threaded insert inside the knob is the source, maybe some glue inside there might do the trick, if you can keep it out of the threads.

.....and the shift count was also a joke. I'm just full of'em today!

It's not the knob. To prove it, take it off and drive around. There is no cure for this except to get another shifter. It's a characteristic of the Hurst. Cutting off the exhaust hangers on the tranny Xmember won't do any good either. The 1/8" play you mention should not be there though. I think Hurst might of come out with a redesign that makes it a little better, but hey, you wanted a performance shifter right?

Its the stupid handle attaching to the shift rod!

Pull the bolt out and find a nut and some neoprene washers. That will shut her up

You are correct, it's not the knob. I did what you said, took it off and drove it. It still rattled.

I know the those bolts are already tight but I will give your suggestion a try anyway and see if it works. I hope it does!

The tightness doesn't seem to matter. It's something about the design, the metal groves that mesh together seem to be the culprit. I recommend adding a nut to the bolt to make up for the gripping force lost by essentially putting a gasket between the handle and shift rod.

Check the park brake handle too. They're known to rattle.

I'll be damned if mine didn't start rattling this morning. Jammed 4th@4000 and "buzzzzzz". I fixed it though, turned the radio up a little and it went away. Weird

Yep - that's been my fix for it too. So far my Alpine/ipod stereo has been the best mod I've made to the car!

I know this is definitely coming from the shifter - not the brake. When I get home from work tonight I will be trying Crazy8's suggestion. I'll let you all know how it works out.

I got some nylon washers and some nuts to cinch down the other side. It did reduce the rattle but did not eliminate it. Looks like this is a live with it thing until and unless I replace the shifter.

I am convinced the up and down play is not normal. I was wrong when I send 1/8 movement, though. More like 1/16, but it's definitely there and can be noticed. When I took the boots off I could see the movement in the assembly.

The Hurst shifter for the C5 Vettes had rattling issues, too. Alot of times it was the shifter ball. We used to put alot of teflon tape on the threads, and then screw it on. Try it you never know.

Did you reuse the stock metal sleeve on the front mount bushing? does the entire shifter move when you shift?

No, none of the mounted parts move. What moves is the short rod you screw the chrome shift stick on to. I am sure that the slight up and down play in that is the cause of the rattling. I bet if you took your lower boot off of yours and pulled upward on the shifter you would not feel or see any upward play there.

check the poly bushing. It may be torn, causing the extra movement; 1 and 3 may be limited b/c they may be lightly pressed aginst the console opening.

mine does move like your describeing 1/16 of an inch. I was asking if you put the metal sleeve in the front bushing becuase if not the whole shifter will move and it will be a pain to shift. Thats not the rattle. its a hurst.

You got that from me right? so were are talking about the billet hurst shifter and not the FRPP hurst.
