Fake gas cap solution

Okay, I know many people believe the fake gas cap on the trunk helps accentuate the heritage look of the mustang, but I'm in the camp of big fake chrome gas caps are a bit tacky.

The removal is easy enough. What is the solution to the key hole?

I haven’t used a key to open the trunk of any vehicle I’ve owned and feel this is a redundancy I can live without. The best solution would probably be to have a body shop fill and repaint the trunk, but the cost involved in my opinion is not worth it.

The options I’m considering are:

1) Painting the current one flat black and sticking it back on. I would rather not do this because I have no faith in my abilities as a painter. I can see this being easily screwed up and not looking good at all.

2) Removing the cap and leaving it naked. Down side pretty obvious here. Fake cap might be better then exposed cylinder.

3) Purchasing another “pony” emblem used on the front of the car and sticking it over the key hole. I’m not sure this one works. Does anyone know how far out the lock cylinder sticks out? If it is to far out of flush the pony will not work.

Here are some pictures I found that sparked the idea:

I would really like to use the pony painted like this one but the cost is very high:

Does anyone know if a vinyl shop prints something similar that I could just stick over an oem emblem?

I respect the view of anybody that believes the trunk should be left alone, but please keep the replies respectful of the thread's intent

I saw one the other day with no faux cap. Below the key hole there were two larger holes spaced horizontaly. I think that is what the pony emblem is covering in one of your pictures. Looked like the key cylinder stuck out about 1/2".
