2006 Mustang GT Noise's

I'm new to the Mustang performance world and everything I get done to my mustang is solely installed by a local Ford Dealership. I've created this thread because since upgrading my mustang I've been getting noise's that I have never had before. I have a couple of noise's in the rear end, one being a clunky/knocking sound at low speeds making a left or right turn into lets say a parking space and also when going over even the smallest bumps. The other noise I have is only heard when driving with windows up at a speed of 40kms or more sounding like medal on medal scrapping, almost like if you were to rub two brake pads together. The dealership told me when they gave me the car back that I will be hearing some new noise's because everything in the driveline/suspension is new and has to break in. I just find it weird that I never had these noise's before with stock parts even when the car was new and being broke in, but yet I have them with performance mods. These sounds are all recent since the upgrade of my PH Bar, BSteer Kit, Rear LCA, 3:73 Gears, Front and Rear brake kit, front LCA. Again guys I don't know much about this stuff. I just ask the dealership to upgrade things and they do. Thanks

As you mod your car you will hear all kinds of new noises squeaks rattles vibrations etc... As i think 07stanggt said...if you want your car to sound look and drive stock...leave her stock.

Its all part of modding it man

Really? The sound in the rear end is driving me crazy. Afriend was telling me maybe adjustments to the panhard, any thoughts? By the way how do I delete the other threads that are copies of this one?

your moaning and groaning in the rear sounds like the clutch packs tsb to me in the rear. The work gets done at your dealership so I assume you're still warrantied even with the 3.73. Could be a bad gear install too

That TSB was already fixed under warrenty before I did these mods, I'm sure, but I'll double check with the dealership. Bad gear install what do you mean? The dealership didn't install correctly? Any thoughts on the clunking noise as well, almost sounds like there isn't even a sususpension in the rear end?

bad install meaning not done properly or done half assed...not saying it is, but it's possible. Even if the clutch packs were fixed I'd still have them do it again, a friend didn't have the problem until his gears were installed. Sounds exactly like what you are referring to, clunk/groaning noise when making turns at slow speeds. The clunk in the rear could also be some loose bolts, go over the bolts and make sure they are torqued to spec. If the suspension was pulled apart and put back together more than once using stock bolts it may be time to replace those bolts. They aren't meant to be torqued more than twice. Also if you have a manual the driveshaft being a two piece is known to clunk when putting it into gear. I don't know though because I have an auto

you might wanna re grease your panhard rod and LCAs if they have grease fittings. those could be part of the noise if the dealership didnt grease them properly.

It is possible that they rushed the job. I've heard this dealership rushing jobs on other guys in the area as well. I phoned the dealership and they said the TSB was warrenty already at 43,000kms, and if there is a problem with it again it will not be covered because of my current mods. Whatever, yada yada. Shouldn't my new parts have come with new bolts? What I really didn't like hearing the dealership say was this is the first newer Mustang that they ever did any kind of mods on.

I'll try greasing a few things up and see if it helps. In the meantime I have an appointment to get the rear end looked at. The mechanic at the dealership said it is most likely that some bolts may have come loose as the parts begin to settle. Now one question I have - Do most mods come with torque/adjustment specs. Maybe they didn't adjust something the way it should be adjusted.

The metal on metal noise could easily be a rotor dust shield rubbing on the rotor, with that noise plus a clunking noise I would check the caliper mounting bolts, And get them to re-check everything. Also improper pinion bearing pre-load, backlash and side bearing preload can cause a clunk. Clutch packs are basically a preload for your side gears, they will not cause a clunk per say but more of a chatter sensation, like grabbing. There is a way of checking them with a torque wrench. Jack the car up in the back end on one wheel. Set a torque wrench to 60 ft.lbs. On the wheel that is in the air try to rotate by turning a lugnut with torque wrench in clockwise direction. If wheel moves before torque wrench clicks there is not enough clutch pack preload. Just some info for you. It really sounds like something Loose though. Hope this helps you.

Excellent thanks for the advice. Would you mind if I printed your post and brought it to the dealership with me for my appointment.

Thanks again

Yes no problem. Just keep in mind that the 60 ft. lbs is not exactly what the service manual will tell you. Its a number I have calculated because from nut to center of axle there is a little distance which provides a mechanical advantage which must be calculated when using a torque wrench. Its a number I have found that works good with all limited slip diffs when built to FORD specs. Sometimes bolts will back off also so don't be too hard on them, lol.

FYI, I'm hearing (across the board for most) that Ford is telling everyone that this clunking in the rear is a normal noise for minor slip in the ring/pinion. My '06 has done it since new and I've run this thing hard since new. No problems in the rear. It worried me, too, but all of my club members who experience the clunking you speak of have had no problems. I never heard mention of the clutch pack TSB in any conversation involving the clunk. I know nothing of that rubbing sound, though. Hope you figure out the issues, though! One suggestion I have is checking security (with proper torque) of stuff under the rear. Changing out to the SVT LCAs, I found my driver's side LCA snug, but nowhere NEAR torque. This thing's had some hard street launches, so maybe it's my fault, but I'd check there, too. I hadn't checked the UCA, though. That's next.

Did you do anything with the rear upper control arm? They are known to clunck in this area due to the incorrect hole size from the factory.

use rubber hangers lol. i had an exhaust shop try and cheap out and just weld my hangers to the body. i left the shop, hit a red light, stopped and idled, heard my exhaust vibrating, and i turned right the fuck around and had them fix it.
