Painting Stock Rims...

I decided my stock rims were going no where and since i will be using them for Drag Radials, I thought I would make them more aggressive looking for the track...

Here are the steps I took for painting the rims...

Before

First I setup some cardboard in my garage to lay the rims down and work with...
I then started sanding the rims down down to the bare Metal.. With a very rough sand paper that scraped away the finish pretty easily...

To get in the small crevasses I used a wood drummel and my hands with some sand paper... (after words I had no finger tips)

Then I sanded everything with 2000 grit sand paper to make everything extremely smooth...

This is what my rim looked like after I was done sanding...

I then started with a thin coat of black primer...

I proceeded to add coats of primer till I had about 5-6 coats giving at least 20mins inbetween each coat... I then left the rims out to bake in the sun for a while (Be sure its not windy because any dust on the rim could bubble and look bumpy)...

I then started with a Glossy black spray paint and evenly sprayed each rim...

Here is the difference between "flat black primer" and a "Gloss black"...

After doing about another 5-6 coats of black Gloss I then left them out to dry...

I have yet to clear coat the rims because I just have not had the time... I accidently bought a clear coat paint with glitter in it... lol Decided that was not my style lol....

Summed up:

- Sand rim down to metal

-Get every crevass

- Then sand with a 2000 grit sand paper

- Use Dupli color primer and do about 5 coats

- Use Glossy black paint and do about 5 coats

- Wait 20 mins at least between coats to let the paint sit

MOST IMPORTANTLY....

use protection...lol

Seriously I was blowing black paint out of my nose for 2 days straight... I highly reccomend it....

But guys this was my first time painting anything of importance to me and I feel I did an alright job lol... These are drag rims now, so I dont mind minor imperfections...

-Joe

Yea that little basturd weighs 120 pounds and he wouldnt stop stealing my tools... I had bought a brand new roll of painters tape and he decided he was going to chew on it...

Everyone always wonders why his teeth are so amazingly white... Reason is he loves to chew on sand paper...

Does anyone have pictures of any of the stock 18 inch fanblade rims painted black?
I've thought about doing it from time to time, and I'm about to buy some new rims so now would be as good a time as any. If it turns out well that's just a plus.
