Replacing the Shift Knob

(reposting)

anyone know how to remove the shift knob from the boot? Can the boot be reused if I just want to repalce the knob? I got the boot/knob off but it appears to be one piece so I can't figure out if I am supposed to be able to replace only the knob

thanks!

just pull it off. the boot has an elastic stretchable band that hugs the knob. then put the new knob on it and just feed the bottom of the knob into the opening at the top and the elastic band will stretch and hug the new shifter knob.

Changing shift knob 09 Mustang

I have a manual shift 2009 Mustang. I want to change the shift knob. Do I just unscrew the old knob and screw on the new knob, or is there a set screw or other complication?

Note that I just got the car and I have the stock knob and boot.

It's funny that more than half of the posts in this thread occurred 3 years later.

How difficult is it to unscrew the old knob when taking it off? Should it be reasonably easy or does it take a lot of force?

OK. I answered my own question. I went outside and took the old knob off. You just unscrew it counterclockwise. It does not take a great deal of effort to unscrew it. Getting the boot loose was slightly tricky because I was being extra careful not to tear or hurt anything. However, it is like said earlier by someone else here. I could have taken it loose much easier than I did.

By the way, the reason for my questions was because I bought a Bullitt knob. However, I refused to buy the Bullitt boot. Nevertheless, with the help of a local machine shop, I got the Bullitt knob properly installed on the stock boot with the correct orientation. I had to shim it just a frog's hair to get it to tighten all the way in the correct position. I was not satisfied earlier because when I lined it up I could still twist it further over. By doing so, it was no longer lined up. By trial and error, the shimming got it just to where it is fully tightened at the correct position.
