Hurst Short Throw Shifter Help Needed

I installed the Hurst short-throw shifter on my 2006 GT this weekend, and have a couple of questions for those of you that have it. First, will the "notchy" feeling get better with time? It seems like it is extremely notchy going from 4th to 5th. Second question, and the most important one, how much front of the car to back of the car play do you have in your shifter while in gear?? Side to side is stiff, and hardly any play. Front to back I have about 1/2 to 1 inch slop at the ball. It is really starting to drive me crazy . Before I tear it apart and start looking for problems, I wanted to know if that is normal. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I installed the Hurst Short throw in my red 06 GT
(featured in mustang world select mustangs on 11/23/06)
and experienced same problem only mine was sticking a little between 4 and 5th gear. Rather than tear it back apart hence as you know the installation was tight, I choose to drive it, dog it, and race it etc for a while and see if it would loosin up which it has although it is still kinda notchy. Maybe it will work better in the 09 slowmareo. I dont know.

Confused

Wow

I am waiting for mine to arrive from Brenspeed and I tracked it, its going to be here Monday. Im having the dealer install mine, but I had heard many stories about the two bolts that hold the shift handle to the shifter its self will work loose and cause the very slop your talking about.

Red Loctite is supposed to keep this from happaning, did you use any? We know how weird some dealers are, so I asked where I bought my 07 GT if I installed the Hurst Short Throw, would it cause me problems down the road warranty wise.

I was told point blank, "you will void your warranty" Then they told me that naturally if I had this shifter on my car that I would be thrashing the tranny. I went to another dealer "Jordan Ford" here in San Antonio. Some fool woman with a bad attitude just said "no way"

Just for kicks I asked them how much they would charge me to install the shifter and pointed out that they sell the Hurst Short Throw, because there is one on the wall in the accesories dept. These people actually told me that was a Ford shifter!!

It was definitly a Hurst, and they told me they "only" wanted $345.00 for it!! Just for the shifter, not the install too.

After pointing out that Brenspeed sells them all day long for like $177.00, and was told that I better go buy it then, I had enough.

I went over his head and informed them that he was trying to gouge the crap out of me, and also that they were portraying the Hurst Shifter as there own. long story short, They are installing the shifter for $60.00. And the work is compleatly guarenteed. The Hurst Short Throw Shifter will be added to my cars parts list. Nothing in my warranty is affected in any way.

But I did have to have Ford do the work for it to be covered, and for $60.00 im glad to let them.

I installed the Hurst shifter on Monday. I love it. No problems and I don't have any play left to right when in gear. I believe from talking to Hurst that the "Notchy" feeling is supposed to be there, kinda like a "positive locater". I think it is a good feeling and would not want it to go away. IMO. The shifter feels much better than the Tri-Ax that I had in my 02 GT.

zero play front to back, as meantioned already check the two bolts holding the ball handle on, make sure to locktite. Then make sure the stops are correctly set.

There should be very little play once set.

As for the notchy feeling, get used to it or get another shifter. It lessens a bit over time being used but the notchy feeling will always be present.

I have the Roush shifter and at first is was the same. My notchy feeling was between 3-4 but I have been driving it awhile and has seemed to break in. I love it!! Havent missed a gear and shifting better, and it's as it says a "short throw shifter"

I think it's funny that this post got pulled back to the top. I didn't know people looked past the third page of forums !! Just an update...I took it back apart and noticed a hairline split on the actual shifter assembly. Ruled manufacture's defect and replaced without a problem. On the second time around install, I actually used longer bolts with lock washers and nuts, and it works awesome. No more play at all and feeling much more connected to the driveline. I too love it. Had it right for about 3 months, and no more problems. Much better than other aftermarket shifters that I have tried.

Im so glad you said that! My shifter is arriving Monday, and I think I will do what you did and use longer bolts and nuts to hold the shift handle on.

Yeah, the bolts work good. It's the only way to be 100% sure it's not gonna come loose on you at the worst time possible. I'm thinking getting on the freeway going from 4th to 5th might not be the best time to be left holding a chrome rod with white ball that is no longer physically attached to your car. LOCTITE Works, but nuts insure!!
