Hurst Comp plus shifter "vibration" rattle...

Has anyone had a problem with the shifter and the ball rattling? Did you get it to stop? talked to Morgan at Hurst and he gave me some bs about fabricating and adding a neoprene strip to the stainless steel stick to get it to stop rattling when I accelerate...(what kind of cheap ass backwoods f-ing answer is that...)

got your pm. Ill ship you the new ball tomorrow though i doubt it will fix your problem for more the a little while. I hope it does.

Glad you got someone at hurst. adding a strip to the stick? give me some details on what he said, im interested in that.

I can tell you something that sounds totally stupid that stopped some recent rattling i had.

As you know, i had the white ball and it started rattling a little bit a couple weeks maybe a month after i put it on. I pretty much ignored it, my car is loud, i never really even noticed it. I put a black knob on and it went away. well that started rattling recently. I ignored it, i drive with the windows down anyway becuase if not its to loud in the cabin for me. Anyway i never greased my shifter, where the lower stick goes into the assembly, that ball part there. it started squeeking lately, metal on metal and i didnt grease it so no big shock it was squeeking. anyway i bought some white grease from advance, a little tube for like 2 bucks and greased that ball down there, while i was doing it i put some of that grease on the bottom of the bushing in the knob that screws on the stick. squeek and rattle are gone as crazy as that sounds. maybe it was just the act of taking it off and putting it back on, maybe the grease on the lower part has an affect i dont know. but its all quite again and shifts a lot smoother as well. actually made a big difference.

And again, only put that ball on hand tight.

Any time you install urathane bushings (which the hurst comes with) they should be greased with white lithium grease before instalation. It prevents binding due to the fact that urathane bushings don't flex like stock rubber bushings. The lack of lubrication on the urathane bushings can cause squeaks & rattles.

I know what your talking about... the vibration is the stiffer bushings.. they transfer more than rubber..

Rich, Thanks for replying to my thread...Morgan is one of two tech guys that work at B&M Hurst. Don't know if you've dealt with him or not, but after two weeks of leaving messages I FINALLY got him on the phone. He was trying to tell me that because of the way our shifter is made, being that it is more rigid...it will transfer vibration through the stick, and rattle a bit...I told him that quite a few guys that I know have been experiencing the same thing, but that mine seems to be way noisier than anyone I know. ...he was trying to tell me it's not the ball.
I proceeded to say to him "Morgan, listen to this and tell me if this sounds the way my brand new, 300 dollar Hurst shifter is supposed to sound.....(holding the cell phone up to the stick rattling as I was doing about 80 down the tollway...)

So he suggested I make a neoprene strip, put it between the part where the base of the shifter screws on to the stainless steel bar is and then re-tighten the allen screws.

I've been driving with the windows down too, cranking the radio, but its' more noticeable than ever. The screw that touches the bottom of the ball starts vibrating...sounds loose when I start accelerating....it is much more loud than it ever was before...
I did try what you said...I took the top part off and tried the stock shifter part...but like I said, I really cranked on the ball when I re-tightened it.

Rich-it never was like this for the first month or two that I had the shifter on the car...I had no issues with any vibrations or noise whatsoever with it...it's a really awesome shifter, so I'm wondering if I screwed up the ball when I re-tightened things...

Yea i have heard the "its not the ball before". Its not the ball cuaseing the vibration but it is the damn ball making the noise. i'll send this ball, just hand tighten it and try putting grease where i did at least where the stick comes out of the assembly. That strip between the lower and upper stick is not a bad idea either. He is right, the vibration is cuased by the desigg of the lower assembly, prothane bushings and its just more rigid billet aluminum, so anything that can dampen that vibration would help with the rattleing.
