Question

Powdercoat valve covers?

I am going to have my Hot Rod cams installed in a few weeks and wanted to have the valve covers powdercoated while they were off. The shop doing the install has a powdercoating place right next door. I asked him about haing it done and he said the only problem would be that the shop sand blasts the covers. He said if there are baffles in the covers that can't be removed it would be a problem with the sandblasting getting in there and not coming out. They have to be sent to another shop to be diopped or something to get the sand out. So it wouldn't be able to be done and ready to go back on the car after the cam install. Does anyone know if our valve covers have baffles in them that cannot be removed? If I can't remove them I'll have to just paint them but I'd like to have them powdercoated. Someone please help me out.

don't know about the baffles. erin will though. he does his own powder coating i'm pretty sure. if you do go with paint don't do it yourself order these. a bit pricey, but dammit man. UniqueAutomotiveDesigns.com

Good to see more people joining the Hot Rod cam club You'll like 'em (as long as you get a good tune for them).

I can't answer your question on the valve covers. I have no idea. I'm just going to paint mine, though. It'll cost me $5 instead of... well... I'm not sure what powdercoating would cost, but I'm sure its expensive. I do realize it would look better and last longer, though.

Best of luck!

War, if your powder coater has any clout in the industry then this job is butter. There is no problem with baffles, they only need to prep the exterior so what the heck would sand be doing on the inside of the cam cover? Rubber plugs are generally used to stop any blast media from getting on the under side.

I'd talk directly with the powder coater, sounds like your mechanic is a bit mis-informed as to the prep process. That said, if there was an issue, you can prep these covers via chemical then scuff by hand.

Most powder facilities are now using fine partical glass as their blast media, mainly because it's reuseable until it becomes too fine. Sand is old school.

War Machine, yes there is an area on the
underside of the covers, where the material
from the sand blaster could get trapped.

i like your plan about the powder coated covers,
i did the same thing when my cams went in

good luck and let us know how you like
the hot rods

If I'm not mistaken if you get the cam covers from UniqueAutomotiveDesigns.com and you send them your old ones back to them. You get $100 back
