Hot Rod cam guys help please...

I've had my Hot Rods in for about 2 weeks and have been trying to get a tune I like for it. The shop that did the install tuned it pretty good. The only problem is when I push the clutch in and let the idle while I'm coasting to a red light. The idle drops to about 500 then surges between that and about 1000 until I come to a stop.

Right now I'm trying Bama. Doug's first tune got rid of the surging but when I push the clutch in the rpms would drop to 500 and stay there until I stopped then come back to normal idle speed. It also stalled the car when I tried to inch up at a red light some. I let the clucth out some and moved up a few feet then the rpms just kept dropping until the car died. It did that like 3 times in a row at that light but didn't do it again.

He just sent me another tune yesterday that I tried out last night and this morning. It's doing a similar surging to the tune from the first shop.

Does anyone know what's causing this? Does anyone else with them(especially Tribal) notice the same thing? Doug's doing a great job trying to get it right for me but I was just wondering if this is something that can't be fixed and you other Hot Rod guys are just dealing with it.

when it comes to cams or blowers, the best solution is a custom dyno tune, not internet/mail order tunes. Doug @ bamachips is great, but it can be days or even weeks before you get the car corrected via over the phone.

I see you in Delaware. If you'd like, take the trip over to Aston PA and go see my guy CR @ Tillman Speed. very knowledgeable and great tuner. had done a lot of the FRPP hot rod cam tuning with great success and great overall power. there's a lot of tuning parameters that need to be adjusted for those cams, and the only way to get it where it needs to be is on the dyno, and a few pulls.

Alright I'll check him out. I know a dyno tune is best but was just trying to get a tune to hold me for a little while. I'll check him out though. I've also thought about maybe trying JPC in Maryland. Anyone else know of a good place to go to that knows the Hot Rods best?

In there area you are in I know of 2 places that I (me personally) would let work on my ride. One is JDM Engineering and the other is JPC, If I had to choose between the 2, I'd Pick JDM.

JMO though.

I have the FRPP cams. Doug at bama can not fix this i went back and forth with doug and he said my car was my problem. In house he maybe a great tuner but this is an internal engine mod not a cold air kit. Every car is different. The tune doug sent me was 4 degress off from where it needed to be. I had my car dyno tuned. NOW my car runs right.

P.S good luck getting your money back from doug. If you need anymore help fell free to ask.

So you had the same problem I am talking about and Doug couldn't stop it? Does he have any return policy for an email tune? Looks like I'll need to get a dyno tune appointment set up soon then.

call up CR (chris rose) and make an appointnment, you wont be dissapointed. i think he is still running a custom dyno tuning special. I payed $250 for a full dyno tune, that price included setup fee, strapping, unlimited dyno pulls & A/F reader (sniffers) everything!

CR knows what he's doing, he tuned my whipple to put down an astonishing 480RWHP conservatively and the car feels like a mad beast!

tell him Paul from NJ sent you, he'll know who I am, I talk to him almost everyday.

Thats weird, I've had the FRPP cams in my car for about 450 miles now with Bama's tune and I don't have and idle surge problems. Mine stays right around 900-950 at idle. My wife has been driving it on the freeway to work and never had any stalling problems either. I had it on the dyno last week and the a/f was right on 13 pretty much all the way across with one little bobble around 3700 rpm. The guy running the dyno said it wasn't anything worth messing with. I must be one of the lucky ones!! Good luck getting yours sorted out.
