How to: Swap axle shafts

After much research prior to starting this project, I did not find any detailed write-ups with pictures. It is a very simple process, but I am a visual person and thought this might help others like me.

This project was done on a 2007 Mustang GT rear axle.

Step 1: Remove wheel. As you can already tell, I had to swap my left (driver's) side axle shaft.

Step2: Remove brake caliper, caliper mounting bracket, and brake disk. There are two 13mm bolts holding on the caliper, and two 15mm bolts holding on the caliper bracket. The disk should slide right off the lugs. I also took the liberty of removing the ABS sensor (one blot) so it would not get damaged.

Step 3: Remove axle differential cover (ten 13mm bolts). Before doing this, you will have to lower the panhard rod to get clearance to remove the diff cover.

Step 4: Rotate the rear axles until you are able to see the pinion shaft lock bolt. Remove this small bolt, and rotate the axles until the pinion shaft slides out.

Step 5: Now that the pinion shaft is out, you can actually push the axle you are going to replace towards the center of the vehicle. This allows you to view and remove the axle retaining clip, which just slides out.

Step 6: Now carefully remove the axle by sliding it out. Inspect the axle bearing and replace if needed. Insert new axle shaft slowly, rotating if needed to properly seat it. Replace retaining clip and pull axle back towards the outside of the vehicle. Replace the pinion shaft and lock it into place with the pinion shaft lock bolt. Be sure to line up the paint mark on the shaft.

Step 7: Clean the surfaces where the differential cover sits, and apply RTV silicone in a 1/8" bead, and around the bolt holes. Replace differential cover. I took the extra step, and grinded my cover down, sanded it, and re-painted it black. Turned out decent I think.

Step 8: Re-fill the differential with 75w-140. I used redline (synthetic is a must) and this application takes 2 liters. Consult your owner's manual for different applications. The picture shows the fill plug on the front driver's side of the diff. I used my ratchet driver to remove the bolt.

Step 9: Replace the brake hardware. Replace the wheel.

Done! Nice work.

Thanks

I came across your thread and photos while doing research for a brake upgrade that will require removing the axle shafts for my 2007 GT, and just wanted to thank you for the clear thread and great photos. I have the manual and yes, this is a simple things to do, but like you, I am visual and the photos help a ton.

Great job,

Jupes
