2005+ Mustang exhuast 101

Questions come up frequently so I thought I would do this. This way at least I can link it. It covers some of the most common question I get asked.

In stock form our exhaust is as follows. The four sections are separate pieces connected with clamps.

Exhaust manifolds, mount to the engine.

Then the down pipes with the cats going into an H crossover. That’s all one piece.

Then the pipes that go over the rear axle.

Then the axle backs.

The term crossover refers to the place that the dual "two" exhaust systems on our car are connected. H, X, or the prochamber which is just a box.

It’s easy to see which of the X or H would flow freer or more efficient with less of a disturbance. Just look at it, H X. that’s all I’ll say. If you can’t see it you probably won’t feel it.

The theory behind the prochamber is that the exhaust gasses fill up in the box and are heated causing a scavenging affect. So in essence it slows the gasses down to speed them up. The prochamber is supposed to outperform an H pipe, but in my opinion it’s not going to outperform an x pipe. But the idea is, get close to x pipe performance without the higher pitch of an x pipe.

So our dual exhaust system is in four sections. Technically its 7 pieces. 2 manifolds, 1 catted mid pipe with crossover, 2 over the axle pipes, 2 axle backs.

Now let’s look at a Kooks long tube x pipe set up. The same would apply to any long tube mid pipe system. Mac long tubes and prochamber..... Same principle.

2 long tube headers

2 legs, catted or not

1 crossover, x or H. (or like a said "prochamber")

Here is a picture of the kook’s catted H pipe assembled. The side with the cats would mount to kooks long tube headers. The side with the H is where those two over the axle pipes would mount. Whether you’re using your stock over the axle pipes, or a "catback" system.

Catback systems When companies, any exhaust company, says cat back system. What they mean is.... 2 over the axle pipes and 2 axle backs.

It’s not going from the cats back; it’s going from the crossover back. So these are universal they could mount to the stock h pipe or any other aftermarket midpipe.

For example I had the magnapack cat back system hooked up to my kooks catted x pipe. That same magnapack catback system could have mounted to my stock H pipe, or could mount to a MAC prochamber

What you can’t mix match is mid pipes and long tubes. You’re not going to be able to mount a prochamber to kook’s longs tubes without some modifications on your part.

Here are some pics of catback systems.

Here are some pics of axle backs.

Stingers

Kooks Race axle backs on top and Magnaflow magnapacks on bottom. These are actually both part of a catback system and wont mount to the stock over the axle pipes. The angles don’t line up.

Steeda Race axle backs

FRPP GTA

JBA

Notice some of them are oval, some square, some are round.

And look at the stingers, they are round like Kooks, steeda or magnapacks but they are shorter in length and bigger in diameter. The smaller the muffler, probably the louder. The stingers get their deep throaty tone probably from the short length but bigger canister.

Here is an example of a replacement mid pipe. This is the magnaflow catted x pipe and the o/r prochamber. These mount to the stock manifold or Shorty headers.

On this magnaflow it is all one piece, notice no clamps. So it’s designed like stock.

Here is the prochamber to stock manifold. The clamps are not on this but if you look close right behind the hanger, you can see it’s not all one piece.

Again these could mount up to the stock manifold or any brand of Shorty header. Any brand of "cat back" system could connect to them after the crossover section, or you could just use your stock over the axle pipes with any axle back designed to fit the stock over the axle pipes.

I would put up picture of Shorty headers but don’t ask in public about buying Shorty headers you will get flamed. Just buy them put them on and tell everyone you got them for free and installed them yourself.

I hope this makes sense and I didn’t make too many mistakes.

very nice post! Maybe this will clean up the ridiculous amount of exhuast threads that have been answered time and time again.

THANK YOU!

So . . . just so I'm clear . . .

The Kooks axle-back is really a cat-back system that comes with (2) axle-back's and (2) over the axle pipes from the cross-over

The Corsa Xtreme is only (2) axle-back pipes that actually needs (2) additional "over-the-axle" pipes to connect to the cross-over. Can the stock over-the-axle pipes be used for this function? Or would I also need to look at getting additional piping for that if I ended up going with the Corsa's?

Yes you just mount the corsas too the stock over the axle pipes. no you dont need anything additional.

I was just pointing out that the kooks for 675 are catbacks where as the corsas for 710 are just axle backs. Im mean its kinda of a more accurate price comparision.

I mean honestly at N/A power levels even mine your probably not seeing any gains with the mandrel bent catbacks. They are bent better. I would just think that you really wouldnt see any gain with it unless your getting in the 500fwhp range.

But it is stainless steel, better bent new pipes your getting.

Got it. I agree . . . the Kooks seem like much more bang for the buck given they are a full cat-back system. You appear to be the exhaust god! I'm starting to think I would be extremely stupid to not take your advice . . . given my vast amount of knowledge.

How do I rep you?

Not an exhuast god. but i have had the exhuast on and off of my own car quite a few times. and done it on some other stangs around here. I can change the axle backs on my car in about 10 minutes. LOL.

Dont want you to think im pushing any certain exhuast on you. i get kooks and corsa's for the same % markdown so for me it doesnt matter.

I like kooks, but its a loud setup. Get a lot of compliments on it. People that just come up to me. But inside the car, i would say you better like it cuase your going to be hearing it.....all the time In the summer its pure sex period. windows down and you just hear pure engine. Since its cold and i have the windows up, it resonates in that cabin you know. But all three of them are going to do that i think. The corsa's might not be as loud. To me they just sound a little weak in person. Like i said, lost to my magnapacks in a blind taste test.

Its a subjective issue. Makes me nervous for you to buy the kooks based on my opinion. its a lot of money to spend to not be totally happy. I think since you picked the vid of the corsa's with kooks long tubes and catted x, like i said the kooks, corsa'a and magnapacks are very similar sounding in person.

So you've got Magna Flow Magna Pack's? . . . not the Kooks race axle back's? They look almost identical. Tips on the Kooks look a little longer . . . that's about it from what I can tell.

I have kooks now. I had magnapacks. These vids are before heads and spr cams. It is nsr stage II cams. Yes the design is similar. The kooks have less negative things like the magnapacks has a little trumpeting, and got a little tinty sounding sometime. but they were not bad either. The tips on the kooks are 3.5 instead of 4 like magnapacks. Thats diameter yea the magnapacks are a little shorter but you cant see that on the car.

magnapacks

Kooks
