Yeah Rich it's probably not too big of a deal with the life that car lives, or at least not surprising anyway. At least your horrible luck is confined to your rearend (ha).
I'm not sure what's on the market for these engines, but maybe it'd be a good time to look into a better spring?

Well the beehive high lift springs would be my choice. You got manley springs as well but id go comp high lift. The thing really and i said this to JB...i know the do things right crowd and do things safe crowd....its all good and if you got money to throw away, yea swap all 24 springs. But your beating on an engine man, there is no garuntee. Ill think about it, but this could be just one bad spring or one bad run. He agreed. Run it. I mean, forged engines that never see a race track blow up, we have seen this on this site. Thats just the way it is. Lets just say i wont rev it to 7k for a month or two anyway.

I mean keep in mind this engine saw 7500 rpms on about 6 dyno pulls. LOL, these springs. who knows when and why a crack could have started.
Lets be real, who here has seen 7500 rpms on aftermarket springs? Just race cars. Ill have my chat with livernois. Hey i saw a bent crank today on a engine that was DONE right. Most of the racers just dont come online and talk about every mechanical problem they have. Thats the issue. |

By the way. Not to bust your balls but why are you not in the 11s yet man? Have you not been to the track that much this year. I expected 11s from you 3 months ago.

Rich I believe they are Manleys but i dont know what number exactly. I had Cory over at F-L do the heads and set up the cams at the same time. I know he got one set of springs and he didnt like something so he ordered up a different set, all seems to be ok knock on wood but hey like you said you never know-just thought you shouldve got more than 20k....thats why you paid for the upgrade, you knew you were going to beat the piss out of it like I do.

Damn Rich, I just saw this...haven't been here in a couple of days. I'd like to know for sure what kind of springs they are. I doubt seriously that Livernois would go cheap on springs. Maybe just a bum spring. Anyway, a mechanical problem (spring) would explain why you didn't get any code. Good luck with it. I know I should knock on wood like a son of a bitch myself.

Here is the description from the website. 5 axis CNC machined Fully assembled w/o camshafts Intake flow rate 280 CFM Exhaust flow rate 185 CFM Custom valve job Bronze guides Custom ground factory 34mm intake valves Custom ground factory 37.5mm exhaust valves Ford valve seals and locks Livernois exclusive steel retainers Livernois exclusive single coil valve springs No core required Here is what im assuming is the springs sold seperatley. I dont see any other springs listed on their website so im assuming. maybe someone can take the oppurtunity to correct me and enlighten us all. ![]() Ill update after my early morning phone call to livernois. "This spring is the only true drop-in performance spring for the 4.6L 3-valve engine. No added cost for special retainers, spring cups, or seals No machining necessary Designed to work with all factory hardware Give added spring pressure needed for most aftermarket camshafts Eliminate valve float to reduce the risk of any engine damage in high lift or RPM applications Brand: Livernois Item is in stock and ships quickly." |

You know, sometimes you'll see a high dollar valve just break in half too. I doubt you'll see another one go. By the way, I'm doing fine...just kegged up another batch of IPA tonight.

I mean the stage III heads basically say the same thing, livernois exclusive springs. Its sounds the same. but you would think the stage III heads would have some ugrade if these springs were weaker. IDK.

Nice. I need a keg. Yea plenty of people and shops will just say its another livernois failure. But i'm the customer here and its my car. I paid retail for them, i have no real complaint. Shit happens. The whineing $1600 frpp rear end makes me a lot madder then this. |

They may be made by a big spring manufacturer exclusively to Livernois specifications. Stage 2 and stage 3 valve springs are typically the same depending on the lift. Not always though. My Manley springs are good to about .500 lift and came with my stage 2 cams.

Yeah I think the only difference with Stage III heads is bigger valves. Wouldn't that mean more air could come in, and that there would be more room for evacuating post combustion A/F mixture ? |

Yes, bigger valves, bigger flow even with the same cams unless you have some other restriction limiting the flow.

By the time your 16 your going to be building race cars boy. Here you go MF ill tell you this. I know of a n/a 3 vavle the 5.0 4 cammer block stock stroke stock heads 127300 cams 13.1 compressoin 420 at the wheels. Do the math on that. Bring the compression down to a streetable 11.1 running pump gas add some ported heads and bigger cams and tweak some other things on the set up. Tell me you arent looking at 450 to 460. And thats on 302 ci, not even a 322 stroker. Stock stroke, high revver hey. Thats the most power n/a 3v i know of. |
