i'm willing to bet it's the ring and pinion.

my auto also whines when i let off the gas. It comes from the ass end of the car, most likely the diff.

I had a Triax too and over a million miles manny tranny driving experience. That fucking shifter sucked balls! I've had the 3rd to 2nd shit happen at least 3 times with the Triax. Every time I was looking in the rearview for parts scattering all over the street. Once I got rid of that piece of shit it still took me a couple of months to get the nerve up to shift like a maniac again. Oh, and the Triax does have centering springs.

I wouldn't go that far. I mean, the triax was just fine without a power adder, but as soon as the Procharger went on the shifts went south even with Prothane mounts. I swear I hated it and it got to the point where I was just plain afraid to attempt a speed shift at all. I don't have that problem at all anymore.

I'd start with the rear end next. Maybe go to a parking lot and have a friend sit in the trunk and drive around at low speed and listen? Or pull the rear seat down and have someone sit back there and stick their ear over the rear diff area.

You may have to get a trunk-monkey.

If it coming from there pull the rear end apart.
Did someone say they need a trunk monkey? $1,000 and its yours.

Damn how do you hit 3rd to 2nd? That must have been one scary moment! I bet it is your gears, did you break them in when you had them installed?? I only took it easy on my 3.73s for a 1/4 tank of gas worth of distance and that same day i was beating the crap out of it, BUT i have an auto i can't miss shift. When that happened it really could have messed it up if it wasn't heat treated right.

Is this 3rd to 2nd shift problem on aftermarket shifters? Sometimes I've ground gears going from 2nd to 3rd too fast, but accidentally shifting from 3rd to 2nd? I hope I never find out what it feels like...

I actually went into reverse while attempting to go into 4th on my '92 procharged mustang. It was only for an instant, but long enough to cause the tires to chirp. I got back to the pits and my buddy said "I thought I saw your reverse lights come on!". We all have bad days at the track.

As mentioned above, it sounds like the ring/pinion.

I know it's common on the triax.

Tell your buddy to look into one of these>Mustang Shift Handle

Cured my Triax woes more than I could ask for. Forget about that queer knob though. It doesn't even come with the shifter. The guys that have them love them, but they are ugly.

UPDATE!!! It ended up being the differential and gears...both getting replaced today...no tranny issues so thats a plus...here is his post from MustangForums:

"Thanks, yes the tranny appears safe. From my understanding, one of the bearings on the differential had fell off and was kind of just bouncing around in the transfer case, which is why the gears got screwed as well. Will be picking up the car in the morning. Can't wait to drive like a Grandma for another 500 miles. YAY

Also, will be selling a Steeda shifter very soon, so if anyone has a shifter you are looking to sell, shoot me a pm.

Thanks for the help Van, I appreciate it."

If anyone is interested in his Steeda Triax shoot me a PM and I will get with him
