cats or o/r x pipe, roumors

if you take off your cats and make your pipes and off road, i heard that it would reduce power and wil make your car run like shit, so is it better to actuly do high flow cats or stick to off road??? whats the pros and cons

Like DRock said, I wouldn't do it in CA. It's not going to decrease power or make your car run like shit. It's worth about 5 rwhp and a good sound.

there's lots of people in CA that run test pipes, just a big risk... $2,000 ticket if you're caught with non-factory cats (even hi-flows), and you would have to put the stock midpipe back in before getting SMOG'd. It's all up to you, just remember if you're getting pulled over, kill the engine as soon as you stop so theres less of a chance of the cop smelling your exhaust when he/she walks up to your car.

I haven't had cats for the last 16,000 miles and the car runs great. Runs low 13s on street tires anyway. But, I wouldn't do it in california, just to much shit to worry about.

i also heard that you would have to pre tune your engin due to the engine runs off the sensors in the cats.. blah blah blah, idk my friend said this and i was just courious cuz he knows a lot about cars. im awear of all the riskes, but O/R is soooooo much cheaper and i love the sound

thats why you get the tune to go with the o/r pipe cuz ur o2 sensors will be reading the same thing and throw a code.

It might be cheaper now but lets say what the pypes O/R X pipe is what $179.99 at Brenspeed? Yea good price ok, but when you get caught that cheap $180 part just became an expensive $2180.00 dollar part........just a thought

keep in mind if you are in a state that requires emisson testing and you think with a programmer you can turn off your rear o2 sensors...think again. the emissons tester checks for that as part of his diagnostics.

some custom tuners can keep the o2s on yet create a tune that will not kick the CEL on when running a off road pipe.

I have a off road x. One thing worth noting....the of road X pipes are very raspy. I woud like to find someone with a off road H wanting to trade.

its not 1000$ / per cat... and you will get state ref.t so all you have to do is put your stockers back on and go get inspected.. although when they inspect you for that theyll inspect you for everything else too

He's wrong but kinda right. The engine does not run off the post cat o2 sensors (the ones in the cats). Nor do those sensors have any effect on drivability at all. The primary o2s are used for fuel control, and a problem with them can cause drivability issues. The secondary o2s are only used to monitor catalyst efficiency. So without cats you will get a check engine light with codes P0420 and probably P0421 for banks 1 and 2 catalyst efficiency below threshold, but there will be no driving problem. The tune is used to turn off the MIL for you, just so you don't have to look at it. Most tunes you will see that do this will still not pass the OBD2 monitor test because it disables the o2, o2 heater, and cat monitors. Tuners can make tunes that will force the monitors to pass, but good luck getting one to do it.

I thought you got pulled over in your V6 for no reason only because it was blacked out before.

Honestly, I've never heard of a tuner not working with you to pass smog.

Honestly do what you want. I got the O/R X pipe and have loved it ever since. When I have an emmisions test I just switch out the pipe and call it a day(after retuning). Bottom line...you want it just get it. Life is too short to worry about every little detail.

Nasty, on my car the way it is with the brenspeed tune, it would fail an IL emmisions test becasue 3 monitors won't run. But on my brothers LS1 his was tuned by a local guy we knew (he died recently) and has the monitors all passed, despite having no cats, EGR, smog pump, etc. I have been told that an S197 can be tuned that way as well, but you pretty much have to know the tuner to do it. I asked VMP about it, and I forgot what he said but I think it was to the effect of not being able to do it, or at leat not being willing to.
