Synthetic Oil

Hi. I'm a new guy. Just got my 2007 GT last Saturday. Do you guys recommend synthetic oil or fossil oil?

Thanks for the forum. It really gives me an opportunity to learn. The last new Mustang I got was in 1971.

Take care.

Run conventional stuff until you get some miles on the car, probably around 5k or so. Then, definately switch to the synthetic stuff. It'll leaps and bounds better than dino oil but would hamper your break in if you ran it right away.

synthetic oil

My '06 GT came with a synthetic blend which is recommended in the owners manual. The gains in going to a full synthetic are very marginal.
The modualr engines are built to much tighter tolerances than your '71 engine was. For this reason alone a synthetic blend or full synthetic is desireable due to it's ability to flow into those tighter places.
Basically, it's a personal choice but I'm sticking with the syn. blend for now.

I put mobil1 in at my first oil change around 3000 miles . My wife's 4.0 explorer threw a timing chain at 42000 miles and the mechanic blamed it on the engines running so hot that the regular oil sludges up. I had her oil changed every 3-5k miles too. If I didn't like the new mustang style so much I'd have never bought another ford after that. The mechanic did say that with synthetic the problem could have been avoided. I'm not sure if the 4.6 gets as hot but why risk it.

I personally don't like Mobil 1. I tried it in a few other cars after breaking the engine in with conventional oil (about 10k). I did notice a little better mileage but I also noticed that it would burn off quickly. I found myself adding oil in between changes when I never had to before.
I aslo tried Castrol synthetic with same results.
The best for me and my application was actually Amsoil.
I still use it in my daily driver and the wifes car.
Not sure what I'm going to do with the 'stang yet.
More importantly, what filter are you going to use? This will have more of an effect than the oil your running on the life of your engine ( so the "experts" say)

Amsoil ????? WTF is that ? SOIL ?
Just run 100% synthetic from any major brand. An oil filter is just a filter. It is only as good as the owner and his/her replacement frequency.

My First Oil change was at 2500 miles, and I have used Royal Purple ever since. I would also consider AMSOIL but is harder to find, don't forget to pick up WIX Filters, does not matter how good the oil is if it ain't clean.

I ran regular oil in mine for 600 miles, then I switched to Castrol Syntec.

Mobil One synthetic for sure - but not till at least 3k miles on the stang. Conventional oil during break in ensures everything is "seated" and broke-in properly. Synthetic lubes do not allow this to happen properly during break-in because it's so damn good.

then why would the stang come w/synthetic blend stock if its not good?

I just put in Quaker State synthetic. And my 4.6 is running a little better with it. I've always used Quaker State oil. Never had any prob's with it.

Synthetic blend isn't synthetic. It's still considered conventional oil.

Synthetic blend is just that , a blend. There are no guidelines for the oil manufacturers out there to follow so your going to get a wide range of percentages of synthetic and conventional mixtures.
Once again, if you refer to your manual it will recommend the synthetic blend that came in the car for a minimum of 1000 miles ( I think that's the number) for break in purposes. Not like the old days when the break in period was significantly longer (5-10k).
After that, it's personal preference.
And yes, what filter you use does matter no matter what your oil change interval.
Great feedback and responses.

what page in the manual? on page 5 under break in period it says no friction modifier compounds or speacial break in oils, does synthetic oil fall into that cat. and if it does then my car is 60% broken in.?
