Newbie question on intake

hey guys... finally got rid of the turbo neon and got myself into an 05 GT and love it... i got car payment out of the ass so im trying to do as much shit as i can do to improve any and all Ford little restrictions... today i was messing with the intake tube and found like a honeycomb piece in there... Can i just remove that I am not sure as to if it a restriction or a way for the MAF to get directed the air better... please let me know guys i appreciate the help... and any other quick bang for the buck mods you guys know of let me know

Yes, you can take it out...06's and 07's don't even have it. I heard from some 05 guys that it was worth 5 hp or so.

definitely take it out. I did on an 01 gmc and got ~10rwhp, just because of how small the honeycombs were. the butt dyno even showed an increase...lol
my 05 already had a modified MAF, or I would have done the same.

No just pull it out of there Bro.I would run a tube from the bottom of the car to the air box also. This will help the motor inhale more air and make HP.Of course this is the "poor mans" way of trying to do what an aftermarket CAI does.I would buy a set of NITTOs 555r for the back too when you can. This will be a huge improvement as well.

THAT LOOKS awsome i woulnt do anyhing to the outside the car looks great the way it is (stealth) about that little filter u found , when u remove it make sure u disconnect the neg. side if the battery ,and leave it off for about 20 mins, hopefully that will reset the ecm or u might throw cel, which will be a lean code

Hey guy, no need to worry bout that, you bought a GT so you've ALREADY GOT 8 cylinders! That's like..almost twice as many cylinders as your old neon...is my math right? :wink Welcome to a car with 30+ years of heritage and history over the neon....Bout time you put down the rice and put on some muscle!

You know, you can take a Honda and make it an extremely fast, well performing driving machine. You can put turbos on them, inter coolers, upgrade the internals, the exhaust and make them fast as fook.

But at the end of the day, if you blow by me in one of those cars, it still sounds like a lawnmower passed me. I'd much rather stick with my traditional V8. For me, nothing has that all around something that puts a smile on your face, whether it's from the unmistakable sound, the low growl even as you are just cruising down the highway at 65, or the balls out scream when you mash on it and that torque from 281 cubic inches puts you back in the seat. And that's before you even throw any modifications at it.

Many of the younger guys don't realize it, since performance has made a resurgence in the last 10 or so years, with even minivans having over 200 horsepower. But your new GT has 300 horsepower from 281 cubic inches, which not so long ago was considered a decent accomplishment, having more than one horse for each cube.

Excuse my little rant, I got all excited about my car for a minute there, it must be because it's spring. lol

Nice color Welcome

Best Bang for the Buck.....
First I would look into a CAI and Tuner.
JLT II are not that nice looking but are less money than the C&L CAI
I would only consider these two they have the best power increase.
SCT II or Preditor by Diablo tuners, some times you can find them used on ebay. Make sure they are unlocked. Good for 25-30 RWHP

If you do not plan on putting a big audio system in, you could pickup some Underdrive pulleys, they are good for 10-12 RWHP

REMOVE the Pre-Cat, Not needed, just RIP it out (this is if you do not plan on getting a CAI.)
and do what Blackjac said...

If you have an Automatic, you may want to look into a new Stall Converter, 2800 to 3000 is a good range very streetable.
If Manual, If you don't like the Stock shifter they are a couple of options that can help you shift faster.

Mufflers do not net you much HP 1-2 max. but will make you sound better.
the Stock exhaust system is pretty nice and has little problems or restrictions. HI flow cats or an x-pipe are easy to install and can net 10-20 hp
Shortie headers are not any better than the stock manifolds so only choice here is LT headers, Pricy and not easy to install but can net some nice power.

If your are serious into Drag racing, then the next step would be upgrade suspention, drive shaft, Flywheel, gears, Ect... But big money and not easy to do in your driveway. but 4.10 are nice and can cut 4/10ths of the 1/4 mile run. If your car in Manual the 3.55 are good enough for street. and if your an Auto then you have 3.31 which IMO Suck but 500 bucks can fix this (3.73 or 4.10 FRPP) gear install.

Anyway just giving you a list of what some of the guys and Gals are doing here.

You will find the Mustang Community VERY helpful, we are very nice people.
