SC Bypass

Thought I have read somewhere that at least one brand of SC has a bypass so if you don't have your foot in it the SC is not engaged. Those of you with a SC can you run down the road at 80mph with out the SC being engaged or is it always working?

I know that Kenne Bell's twin screw SC has a bypass valve, and they claim that it works the way you described...I guess when I get mine installed I'll let you know...

I can't imagine why you would want to disengage it. It is belt driven just like your water pump, a/c , and alternator. It is running at 80 mph but the gears have it running slower. You can do 80 in 3rd 4th or 5th I forget if it does 80 in 2nd but I know it's close .If you are at 80 in 3rd it is screaming but 80 in 5th you can't really tell you have one.It's all how much foot you put in it.

With a centri the bypass is so when you let your foot off the gas the pressurized air that is in the intake at that time does not try to go back into the supercharger and screw it up...

My centri is always working...But unless I am into the car (under boost) it will drive just like stock...

On a KB though you do have the option to hit the bypass and run 0 boost...

I know very little about SC's so your input is appreciated. I frequently do 1000+ mile road trips, long stretches of 80+mph, and I am not sure how the SC works under these conditions. It seems to me there would be no need for additional boost other then perhaps more efficient burning of fuel.

It would be fine...

Unless you are giving it throttle then you will not get into any noticeable boost...

You would be perfectly fine...

They are technically still turning when your driving but they only make boost if you give it gas.

If you were to shut off the boost since the superchargers isn't working does it still drain as much engine power as it normally would if it were boosting?

Found a site that describes the basics of how SC's and turbo's work. It explains how/why they work but not much operational detail.

Monarck, as I understand it because SC's are belt driven you will always have some drain on engine power. The above mentioned article claims up to 20%,worse case I suspect. It would seem logical that the harder you work it the more the drain.

I drove mine round trip Florida to Pa and did alot of 85mph cruising with bursts to 110 (middle of night in the mountains) and it acted great and I averaged between 22.5 and 24.5 mpg I highly reccomend them and know you won't be disappointed.

hmm no as far as i know kenne bells bypas as they described it is a "valet" bypass meaning you have to maulay bypass the boost i guess for when you give the valet or someone you dont trust your keys so that they dont joy ride....who would want to pop their hood to do this idk but thats how i took it

true but you can get higher gains at lower PSI with a turbo and better gas milage
