Gears upgrade, should i go with 4.10s?

Hi All,

I just ordered my dual exhaust conversion kit and the GT rear bumpers take off...woohoo ....now i am gonna be upgrading gears and i was wondering if i should go with 3.73s or 4.10s. I read the article on MM about the debate between the two but i am still not sure. I am planning to S/C in future (way in the future) and i guess 4.10s is thye way to go. But do you think the 7.5" rear end is strong enough for 4.10s right now without the S/C?

the best rule of thumb, since your going S/C.

Manual = 3.73

Auto = 4.10

How come everyone puts in either 3.73 or 4.10? Does anyone put 3.11 like they used to in the fox bodies? are those to low for the HP of today's car?

Just was curious.

Thanks! Just curious though, why would it be different for manual and auto? and would it hurt the 7.5" rear end in the long run?

I think the newer modular engines get into the torque powerband at higher RPMs, hence the steeper gears. pushrod engines get into it at much lower rpms.

the 7.5 rear end sucks.

the reason for your question is simple.

you lose more power if your an auto and the gears make up for it and you can't really control your shift points as well as a 5spd can.

Yea 7.5" sucks but i guess i have to live with it for now, but i hope it wont break with the new gears.

I get the part about the difference between auto and stick. I guess the best i can do for the shift points would be to get a really good tune....

gears won't break your rear end man.

the amount of TQ you put to it will.

just don't run on slicks and you'll be fine.
