I noticed you have a vortech and only putting low 400's to the wheels, what boost are you running and did you get it tuned?

His tuner was probably conservative with the tune.. that's a trophy winning car and won't do him much good in the garage with a rod out the block. 437 is no slouch of a number either, especially without supporting mods.

My tuner actually went conservative at first as well, until I said I expect to stuff a livernois motor in here by end of summer. Until I said that he was going to hold me around 440-445 with my procharger layout.

I'm only doing 9 lbs. boost. The tuner @ Dallas Mustang, Archie, told me that I am just about where I need to be with my stock bottom. He told me that he has seen a lot of guys that did not heed the 450 max warning and basically demanded that he get them up to 500-600. After they signed
an agreement stating that they would not basically jump his a$$ if they engine blew. He did the tune and a few days later their engine was "lunched". I'm putting in a Manley bottom in November.

Hey Emay,

I see you are from the Chicago area. When do they hold that Chicagoland Mustang Midnight Cruise?

Midnight cruise is a once a year deal. Was a few weeks back. Did you want a link to the Chicagoland Mustang Club meets and cruises?

They run something in the form of a track day, cruise, or simple meet and greet about once a month from April through October.

Regency, couple things to watch for. Was it 460+ on a Dyno Jet or a Mustang Dyno. Typically the Dyno Jets read on the high side. lso remember HP numbers can easily be manipulated. The mustang world as a whole can tell you 450+ is the danger zone, conservative or not, your in an HP range that is known to border on bottom end breakage.

That being said, a tuner that doesn't want his name dragged through the mud will tune low so as not to make a name for himself when pushing limits and forums like this talk about motors that blew coming from his shop. You can't fault true conservative tuners for that.

Let me ask you this though, when you say conservative tune, what do you mean? Some think that 500-525 can be done conservatively. However that's completely false. these modular motors at 480 are really being stretched. When the tuner world say conservative, they mean a the tune has a 11.5 to 12.8 A/F ratio and timing is does not exceed 14-15 degrees advance.

I guarantee you, any S197 coming in at a true 480 to 500hp is putting the timing at 15-17 degrees, and A/F is over 12.8 you simply can't make those numbers on these motors with no internal work without doing so. So in essence how conservative is a tune at the high end of those spectrums? This where people start playing with fire. Some have been successful up there, many have not.

Also, I saw a motor running a novi at 8lbs throw not one but 3 rods, on a dyno jet, just last week, with an 11.8 A/F, 14 degrees of timing at WOT. The pull prior was reading 458hp - 440tq at 11.5 a/f and 12 degrees of timing. Witnessing it personally was quite the experience.

Didn't want to ruin the thread with this, but people may like this type of information...

I really appreciate your input on this subject. I was on another Mustsang website and had a similiar question asked. I gave a similiar response and then all He!! broke loose! I had guys telling me I was wrong and they could prove it....The whole thread was highjacked and all I did was answer a question. I did not mean to cause trouble.....I'm just going on what
Archie @ Dallas Mustang told me and from what I witnessed(watching an 06 blow). I do want to have a vette stomper and when I get the Manley
crank, rods, pistons and valve springs installed....I'll have Archie dial the
pressure up to maybe 10-12 lbs. I'm pretty sure I'll be topping out\
at 550-600 rwhp by then.

Roc, not a problem.. The thing everyone needs to remember is there is no magic number for destruction. Another thing to remember is, if anyone blows a motor, who do you think they are going to blame? The tuner takes the heat, he's bad mouthed all over the net these days. The majority of them don't want that headache.

Now, for the record, I plan on sending my rods out the side of my block in the fall. I'm running 11psi and fully expect carnage just before the cold weather rolls in on me.

Emay,

I found the site. I had remembered the group from WFC10 just forgot to go out to the site.

I see, as you stated it was May 11th but it appears there is another one in Aug. Must be a spring and fall thing. I will have to come up for some of the events. I know I will be at the NMRA event at the dragway (as a spectator) for sure but will have to see if any of the other events fit into my schedule.

Thanks for responding though and BTW...that is one sick ride you have, true form to have the name Eleanor.

GTpony, I don't think that is going to be a midnight cruise, I though I remember them all stating it was going to be a daytime deal.

However, there is a post on the site to redo the midnight cruise at some point and split groups up for it. We had a mixed bag of canon ball runners and legitimate creepers. The mix didn't work well. So they figured they would put another together but I haven't seen anything solidify.

Hope to see you out either way..

Emay, I say money well spent. I haven't did anything yet other than exhaust. I am looking to do what you did, pretty much all of it at once. thanks for the info. Awsome car.
