what does s197 and s281 stand for?

Well they arent really related. An s281 is a Saleen model, like the s351 that is no longer made. "s197" is the platform name for the 05+ body. "sn95" for the 94-98 and "new edge" for the 99-04. You could have a s281 in any of these bodies.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, 281 is the cubic In. displacement for the 4.6 liter v8.

Yep ...the 281 is cubic inches ( I saw it on the Saleen spec sheets)

Yes the GT has had a 281 ci engine from 96-07. The 5.0's were 302
