Tires for my S197

OK, this is totaly up to you all I have not a clue and need some help. Don't tell me to get new wheels its not an option. I have the machined aluminum mustang split spoke 17x8 wheels. What is the best widest tire I can run on this rim and still get good handling? I need high performance all season tires and I'm guessing that some BF Goodrich G-Force T/A KDWS 255/50r17 would work but like I said I don't know? I have Perelli P zero Nero's 235/55r17's right now??? Please explain what you think!

Thanks, Ryan

275 40 17s can be run safely. anything over that is a risk.
my drag tires are 275 40s on stock 17x8 bullitts

Yes I realy feel like I need the all season type tires, When you live in Kansas your mind set has to be a little skewed towards rapid weather change. It is not unusual here to go from a 65 degree day in January and have 8 inches of snow on the ground the next morning. I do have a F-150 4x4 for hunting and pulling my daughters two horse trailer; I try not to even get my S197 wet but it's just a mind set. What did you have in mind Red?

I looked on the Tire Rack sight and 255/50r17's are few, and 255/55r17's do not exhist and it's the same for 245/55 or 50 ??? I wan't to go wider but not alot without loosing my profile 50 or 55??

the BFG KDW2 are sick in the rain and dry but garbage in the snow, but then again so are mustangs. and all my SN95 GTs had 17x8 wheels and the tires size was 245/45-17 so a 235/45-17 would definetly work. ive seen a 275/40 on a stock 17x8 mach 1 wheels so it depends if you wanna rotate or not.

heres some good tires:

BFG KDW or KDW2
Nitto NT555
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

i have a set of the bullit style wheels with 275/40/17 mickey thompson drag radials on them, they look pretty cool, i don't know how they ride though because never driven with them on the street they were given to me by forensicsteve to use at strip, but i've been running on 305/35/18 nitto drag radials

Thanks guys I think I have settled on a size, not a brand yet (255/50r17) that size will allow me to keep my profile very close to factory and 10 solid inches of width on the ground and hopefully this will be good for road race handling. I like to rotate so I need all four the same, compromise- compromise

I agree. I live in Colorado and my Mustang is my daily driver. I drove it every say last winter (including the snow). If you're not an idiot an leave traction control on, you will have no problem. I was quite impressed with the Pirelli tires. Save your cash and invest in something fun for your car. If you lower it, you'll want ot get something else. It looked like crap after I lowered it with the stock 17's. IMO...

you should go 255/45-17. that will give you a lot more choices. with that size you could run the stock pirellis if you wanted to. but most tires have a directional tread so you could only rotate front to rear not side to side.

I'll have to do the math on the 255\45's and see where I would stand thanks. the 255/45's have almost an inch less highth than the 255/50's I will have to do some research on that.

i just did a couple searches on tire rack and discount tire co. and they don't have squat for 255/50. just go with 275/45 or 275/40. the roush mustangs have 275/40-18s on all 4 corners.

If I were you, I would stay away from the Pirelli's. They are a good all season tire, for sure, but they lack the dry traction of the BFG KDW or a Nitto. The 06 I test drove had the P-Zero's on it, and I could light those up far too easily for my taste. The 07 I wound up buying came with the BFG, and it is a far more sticky tire than the P-Zero was.

MY dad's gt has the bf good rich t/a and they are really good sticky tires. He uses them on the street, but we used them on the track... managed to pull off a 12.6 on them at the track with like a 2.1 60 ft or something like that. And they have seen over 20 burnouts from the track and there no were near the wear bar.
