2nd to 3rd grinding

Two things:

1) I picked up my 08 Alloy Mustang GT on New Year's Eve. Been too busy driving like a teen with a new license... all through a 6" dump of a snowstorm. hehe

2) It's got a 5spd and occasionally when I shift normally from 2nd to 3rd when the lever is going into 3rd with the clutch all the way on the floor it'll grind. I've noticed that when I shift, if I pause momentarily between gears it'll go into 3rd without a problem.

I just started driving stick 4 years ago, but have about 60k miles across two cars in experience - is this a techinique issue or mechanical with the transmission? Will getting an aftermarket short throw fix this or is it something that should work perfectly fine? I guess I should have driven some of the other Mustangs on the lot....

Car's got 150 miles on it and I put 130 of those on it.

Thanks and hope everyone's having a great year!

I dunno the ratios yet, I've been actively trying to avoid it by pausing between gears. Plus I've only had the car a few days.

I heard it once when I test drove it for four hours a month ago, didn't hear it at all the day I bought it, and I heard it maybe 5 times yesterday and none today.

I tried searching the forums and it seemed people were having problems with the shifter completely missing shifts which isn't the problem I'm having. Was just wondering if it was common with new cars? Or common at all? Or if I'm horribly cursed and will be visited by three car demons during the night to show me the error of my ways?

well I dont think any grind is normal....Check your fluid level in your gear box??? Other than that maybee its a bad syncro?

Mine has only grinded second

I took it to the dealership and they didn't find anything wrong, yet I can still get it to lock up while idle.

Well now I feel like an idiot, I swear I searched the forums for previous threads about this - sorry if I wasted anyone's time reposting an old discussion topic.

And thanks for confirming that the problem isn't me either. I'll check the gearbox fluid later this evening.

After another hundred miles today I think I need to learn more about synro gears specifically and manual tranmissions in general (automatic transmissions will always work solely on indescribable magical phenomenon and the pressurized remnants of stars long ago pulvarized by comets).

I tend to keep a really loose grip on the shifter - and when I pause between gears going from 2nd to 3rd I actually let go for about a half second. The stick springs to neutral and then I push it up to 3rd. When I do that it works 100% of the time with no abnormal noise, vibration or harshness, et cetera. When I push the stick in one motion from 2nd to 3rd it has grinded every time. I really don't want to try to work it out as it sounds bad. Exactly like it did on my old car when I went into reverse (which did not have a syncro) while the car was still going backwards even though the clutch was floorboarded. That is leading me to believe it's a syncro issue on 3rd. But I don't know enough about syncros - is there just one for the entire transmission or is there one for each gear syncroed?

Another factor that was brought up in that earlier thread was cold weather. Yesterday and today have been between 0 and 20 degrees fahrenheit. We'll see how it works in the 100 degree+ summer.

ya but after rowing thru the gears and driving the car for a few minutes that fluid should be at operating temp....It is starting to sound like a bad syncro...good luck!!

For those having gear grind problems, it comes from the clutch not engaging and disengaging. This is a known problem and really heavy with the GT500's right now. The grind is a known issue and has to due with the clutch dragging due to no lubricant applied to the clutch splines during assembly.

Here is the service tip that is used for replacing the clutch under warranty for the GT500's. My tranny & clutch was replaced due to the issue at 4800+ miles.

Ford Service Tip: "19802 2007-2008 Mustang Shelby GT500 Clutch Service Tip"

The grind is a known issue and has to due with the clutch dragging. The clutch assembly needs to be replaced (part# 7R3Z07B546-B ), and Motorcraft PTFE lubricant (Part# XG8 or D2AZ-19590-A) needs to be applied to the hub splines.

With some reseach, I am sure there is probably a service tip for the Mustang GT and one could find out by contacting Ford AAI in Detroit, not the dealers.

Wow, thanks for the heads up! I'll try to do some digging around on that. I'm guessing Ford's going to warranty it when it fails, in the meantime should I begin a documentation on this by bringing it into the dealer I bought it at and force them to acknowledge the grinding even if they don't do anything to it right now?

I wonder if that's the holdup that's delaying January Bullitt production....

If you are experiencing gear gring going into 1st or reverse then you do have a problem. PM me if you need direction.

No grinding problems so far, except for a busted racing stripe above the faux gas cap everything is really really fun. Started out as an area that came unstuck a day after I bought it and is now broken due to cold weather. I will take it to the dealer and/or the local ford racing speed shop and make them fix it. I think it was originally applied to tight.
