Using Jack Stands...

I always heard stories about cars rolling down the drive up stands for changing your cars oil... It is sad to say that just the other day my neighbor was telling me about a family man that left behind a daughter on the way and his wife because he disconnected his d/s while on a roll up lift...
My father always warned me about this type of thing, how he knows many people that have passed on because of the improper lifting of their cars...
I was really wondering what you guys use when you are lifting your cars and what your techniques are..
-Where you put your jack stands
-How high you jack your car up
-Safety measures you take
-Even brand of Jack stands

I am always thinking about what can happen whenever I am lying under my car and I just want to know if I am taking the right precautious...

Thanks Guys
-Joe

my father almost died the same way, didnt have the wheels blocked, unhooked the driveshaft and the car rolled. I think about it everytime i'm under my car.

Block the wheels if your on ramps, and as for where to put the stands ill be interested in seeing some answer on that myself.

try using 4 jack stands.

you can't roll with no meat on the ground if your on a level and sturdy surface

I always just place the jack stands on the frame rails ... and I always jack my car up the highest my jack will go.

and I pull the e-brake to its up most limit... since all the times I've jacked my car up have been to mess with the shifter.

Always, ALWAYS chock the wheels. It takes 4 seconds and could save your life.

And I'm with Doc. If I have to do something other than take one wheel off to work on the brakes or something, and I need to get under the car I put four corners up in the air, on jack stands. And don't cheap out and buy flimsy little stands, either. Remember with each corner up in the air, your supporting 900 lbs at each corner.

I also never use the jack stand fully extended. And if I'm working under the front of the car, if it won't be in my way, I not only have it on stands, I leave the jack in place. I only let the car down enough to put put the weight on the jack stand and off the jack, and then I turn the handle and close the valve on the jack and leave it there.

I never had my car on stands before, but when it's on the ramps it's in park, with the e-brake up and the wheels chocked.

I couldn't use ramps for the front end
the car was too low.

I Always do that too... rather have the jack stand still in place putting a little force just in case of worst case scenario happened (like a jack stand braking)
