Traction Control & Rev Limit

I'm in the process of getting a tune for my new CAI. A couple of the options for the new tune is to: 1) permanently turn of the traction control, and 2) set a rev limit.

Any of you ever went with any of these options? What is the benefit of turning off the traction control?

As far as the rev limit . . . I understand that it will possibly keep you from blowing up your engine . . . but what do most people typically set this at? . . .red line or below . . . or nothing at all.

Any opinions?

Not sure how much traction control helps in the rain, but I wouldn't want to permanently disable it. I prefer having the option of turning traction control on or off with the simple push of a button. I have an 89 tq tune from bamachips and the rev limiter is automatically set at 6496 RPM.

Yeah, I think having the option for Trac Control is kind of nice as well. Just wasn't sure if there was a good reason to want it off ALL of the time.

Sounds like approximately 6500 rpm is pretty standard for a rev limit?

set the rev limiter about 500 rpm's more than you will be running the car too. If you are shifting at 6000 rpm (Which you should since a stock car makes NO power above that) then set it at 6500 rpm. The throttlebody starts to close around 400 rpm before the rev limiter to soften the load on the engine if you hit the rev limiter. I currently have mine set at 8000 rpm because I run the car to 7200-7400 rpm. I have been having the Traction Control turned off in my car since the first tune from Steeda in 2004 and never had any problems besides having to reset the dash control center everytime the car is started.

with stock heads and cams there is no more power to be found after 6000 rpm and you actually lose a good bit after 5800 rpm and it keeps falling after that.

Cool. Very good info on the rev limit . . . thanks KB Charged. Still a little fuzzy on the traction control though.

Wikipedia says Traction control can automatically adjust your cars performance to reduce slippage (from a start, or coming out of turn, etc) by:

The intervention can consist of any, or all, of the following:
Retard or suppress the spark to one or more cylinders
Reduce fuel supply to one or more cylinders
Brake one or more wheels
Close the throttle, if the vehicle is fitted with drive by wire throttle.
In turbo-charged vehicles, the boost control solenoid can be actuated to reduce boost and therefore engine power.
Ok. But if it makes you faster . . . why not? I guess the argument is for "true" driver control? If this was only a track car, I think I might turn it off . . . maybe. But, if it helps you from hydroplaning . . . or other ways of slipping . . . why not have the option of turning it on and off with the touch of a button?

This car is also my daily driver so I think I would rather have the option.

you could keep the traction control on and not have any problems..I just turned it off since I can forget too when I am in the burn out box at the track and stall the car..My car is a daily driver also but it is all in personal taste if you want it off all the time.

Disabled here, I don't need the headache from forgetting, especially at a track day. Come off lookin pretty foolish when your in the water box and the car stall like KB mentioned..

traction control is the devil, if you turn it off and the car notices it is going sideways, it will adjust to prevent spinning the car, had a friend smash a tree cause of the damn thing

very true. on a stock car if you are shifting past these points you are loosing time and actually going slower than you could.

hey KB what about those twins you were hoping for

That happened to me Wednesday night, with my son with me.
They let me take him down the track, but you have to go single with a passenger.

what do you mean you have to "go single with a passenger"??? at our track you can't have passengers ride in a car under 14 seconds........also that is the rule with a helmet, under 14 seconds, gotta' have one.

They just started doing that again at No Problem.
You can take a passenger with you in a street car but same rules go as with driver they have to wear a helmet and seat belt and you can't line up with another car, you have to make the run by yourself. Which worked out good for me because all I went for was to practice on reaction times.

I am talking to 2 companies about making me a kit. I will be side tracking for a bit because of a purchase of a new house. Then the trans will be next mod before the turbos, so maybe around end of year.

get two tunes - the only difference have the TC off in one. I did that so when I go to the track I dont have to think about the button.

BTW - there is power above 6000 with stock heads/cams with the right FI spinning!

I like people that think like that because they are usually the ones getting new blocks and rotating assemblies. If you have a turbo or supercharger and spinning past 6000 rpm you are on borrowed time because you will be seeing a connecting rods in your near future. RPM's aren't your friend Boost is. The stock connecting rods are junk and even by running to 6500 rpm that is a 50% increase in stress on them and then by sticking 8-12 psi. on top of that and you get one of those cool Vented Blocks.
